So its just a chiller then ? You are expecting the deer to be lardered before it gets there ? I am paying £200 +£5 p.c. just to chill the deer.I would hope that minimal waste would make its way to the larder - there is always some bits and bobs that come out of a carcass but I would be expecting people to bring as little as possible back. If nothing else why bring the guts all the way back?
There’s a lot that needs to be figured out but I think it’s worth giving it a decent effort
Essentially yes - it means you can shoot bucks in the summer and for a lot of people means they can actually handle red deer and it also provides a facility where you can actually sell carcasses. £200 is 10 roe in a year and then you have covered it.So its just a chiller then ? A lot to go wrong and be left holding the ball...
Get ready for the bill when someone leaves the chiller door cracked open during the summer.
Get ready for compo claims if the power goes out and carcasses are spoiled.
Get ready for cleaning up after other people.
To be fair you couldn’t run a coke fridge for £200 a year!Essentially yes - it means you can shoot bucks in the summer and for a lot of people means they can actually handle red deer and it also provides a facility where you can actually sell carcasses. £200 is 10 roe in a year and then you have covered it.
We hear a lot of stalkers complaining that they would shoot more deer (which is badly needed) if they had access to facilities - this is how you get the facility, what’s their other option, set themselves up?
Not expecting it to be lardered, expecting it to be gralloched properly to try and minimise waste.

This^ (pre this coming year of electricity price hikes, starting October; I’d hate to think what the rate will be by April 2023)To be fair you couldn’t run a coke fridge for £200 a year!
My walk in costs me £25 a week (£3.50 a day) when in continuous use which i don't think is too bad considering the size of it.
I had 50% local government grant for my set up. That was towards buying the unit, installation, fitting out, purchase of larder equipment, etc.Wonder what they mean by a “small grant”? As in what percentage of £30K? And before anyone shouts “£30K?!?” please consider:

I'm pretty sure that you'll find similar schemes in other parts of the UK. It was a local project to support small food businesses.Got to loveCommunismWelsh politics![]()
As soon as I see the word 'community'...........Got to loveCommunismWelsh politics![]()

Their costs are massive!Perhaps we are starting to see the hidden costs associated with AGHE's![]()
Great idea and something we have talked about where I stay. Setup is expensive though so maybe a group of you could get together to fund it. I think the rest (ie legislation etc) can be sorted providing the people using the facility are good types!Total pie in the sky at the moment but (without falling out with each other) - what would people pay for use of a larder?
Thinking about the potential for setting one up on a ‘community’ basis and charging a membership fee and a hanging fee to cover any rent and running costs and would be interested to know what people think would be reasonable.
I’m thinking a couple hundred pounds membership and maybe £5 per carcass?
Obviously I don’t want to be out of pocket on it and paying for other peoples facility but what would be provided is essentially somewhere to put deer for either game dealer collection or your own use, we would sort the waste disposal etc and make sure it’s clean (would expect people to clean after use obviously).
We hear a lot about people not shooting deer because they don’t have the facilities - how much a that facility worth to you?
This isn’t an argument about how much a dealer would pay - that’s for you to figure out but it would be one dealer collecting so the price would essentially be fixed.
Any thoughts?
