First Deer Calibre Rifle

The European convention for categorising bullet sizes is to use the diameter across the lands of the bore for which the projectile is designed to be in, not the actual bullet diameter, hence the differences noted.
Yeah, I know. The diameter across the lands is the bore. The grooves are not the bore. Usually a separate operation after boring.
Getting bored? Me too.
Bye.

Once you have a shortlist find a gun shop with a range and see if you can shoot the same make and model in the selected calibre, the one that is the most comfortable to shoot and you shoot most accurately will be the one to go for. Simples

There is only one really good all round calibre that will kill any UK deer out to sensible ranges. Has a fast enough twist to stabilise any copper bullet. Minimal recoil, and what there is is but just a gentle shove.

Those that have one and use one know what it is. All others have yet to find it.

The 7x57.

There will always be a debate - whether you go with .243, .270, 6.5 CM or Swede, .308, 30.06 (the list goes on) it will kill a deer dead. How dead is dead?

Main things to consider is price and availability of ammo. I shoot a .308 for this reason although with 6.5CM is becoming more available around me I might switch for ***** and giggles.

Don't listen to anybody who recommends a specific caliber, because its the best and does X,Y,Z......they all do XY and Z.

Pick the one that gives you the fizz in your loins

Loin fizz is all I came for!

I was in full agreement but now think you need counseling our friend 😬

If you choose .270, buy secondhand.
That's good advice, whatever the calibre. It's a buyers market for 2nd hand rifles thanks to our licensing system, and you can usually find pretty much anything you want at significantly less than the asking price.

308. This is based on easy ammo availability and factory ammo which works well in all barrel lengths. You could have a short 18 inch barrel with over barrel moderator and it would work fine.

Second would be 6.5 Creedmoor. Again good ammo availability, but factory ammo is more optimised for 24 inch barrels.

That recommendation applies if your shooting is under about 300 metres.

Either .308 or 6.5cm. My local feo say all the variations these days are for 6.5mm
I think 6.5 creedmoor really is the best starting rifle these days used to be .308 but things move on….

I assume 6.5CM has no issues running non lead bullets moving forward?

Absolutely none indeed it has a faster twist rate than most .308 rifles to stabilise longer (ie copper) bullets
No doubt correct but doubt this is translates to a noticeable difference in the field - notwithstanding normal gun to gun quirks. I have v acceptable accuracy for both 30 06 running 180gr ttsx for driven and 7rm 150gr ttsx longer range stalking (whether copper works well enough at longer range is a diff question).
6.5 is a little bit easier to shoot v accurately, 308 bit better knock down and more fun to shoot - 270 = ideal compromise 😉

I'm not up to speed with mono bullets in 308 but I have not read of issues shooting mono's in standard 308 barrels.
Do you have any data to support your comment?

It honestly doesnt matter regards killing the deer ! What matters is can you get ammo and components , The answer for all three is yes !
at 300 yards depending on bullet 308 will be slightly down on BC but its not going to be a shot not taken if you have the skill and conditions suitable .
you will get more barrel life out of the creed and the 308
The 270 with the right bullet , which is now happening can head the list with its powder capacity but that wont show and its extra powder means a shorter barrel life .
if your an ammo begger and your in scotland there is more folks to beg off if you run 270
normal stalking to 300 yards ? well i would loose sleep over it
