First Deer Calibre Rifle

The drop for a 150 grain at 2700 fps will still be 125mm at 300m. The poi is the issue and depends upon the poi at 100m
Exactly, drop numbers without reference to zero is useless. To keep it simple I always have my zero at 100m. Then dial where I want my bullet to strike. Mostly have an inch or 3cm high for the stalk.
One of my drop charts for 308, 155 VLD at 2706fps needs 14cm/100m clicks up from 100m zero meaning the 308 155vld at that range drops 3 x 14cm between 100 and 300m. so drops 42cm or 16.5".

I'm not up to speed with mono bullets in 308 but I have not read of issues shooting mono's in standard 308 barrels.
Do you have any data to support your comment?
Ehh it was a reply to a question about 6.5 suitability for non toxic. I wasn't talking about .308? yes .308 can shoot no toxic fine.....

Yup, my 30-06 with 150gr sierras is about the same at 300 yards.

You could say the same of any calibre over 222, but dead is dead. There's no such thing as too dead.
If that's true why not use a 460 Weatherby magnum or a 50cal..you ain't gonna get much deader if one of those hits it...

You don't put a screw in with a sledge hammer do you.. you use the right tool for the job..

I’m in a similar position to the OP. I’m relatively new to the world of CF rifles, and have a .243 conditioned for fox and AOLQ. I guess technically I have a deer calibre, and my experience with the .243 is limited to stalking CWD and Muntjac.

However, my longer term aim is to get a further variation for a different deer calibre to use in different situations and locations - and think that will be .308. I’ve only shot .308 and .270 alongside my .243, so have not much to compare it to, and it may well not be my final position and a long term rifle. It could also be seen as a ‘safe’ or ‘boring’ choice - but starting out, that’s surely a good thing?

I started driving 35 years ago, and in that time I’ve lost count of the number of cars I’ve had, some bought on a whim and some bought for practical reasons. However, I now know what works for me and have settled on a type and indeed make. I’m sure other people won’t agree with my choice, but works for me.

Think it will be the same for me with finding a final calibre. Further down the line as my experience and knowledge grows, I could well end up hand loading a more exotic or rare calibre that meets my needs, but to get on the ladder, and to start to gather what you need to settle on a final choice, the 308 looks like a solid and dependable starting position.

A Ford Escort got me going, and I think the .308 will do likewise. But hopefully with less rust, and definitely more reliability 🙂.

I agree, but you stated that 270 would be overkill for muntjac, in which case so would every other calibre so far discussed in this thread.
Why 270 specifically?

460 and 50 BMG is ok by me but your getting to point where cost is getting restrictive and also the weight of the rifles is getting impracticable.
Ones man's perception of a rifle is always going to be different to another fellers but it's not as extremely different as you are implying.
A 270 for example is not that much different to any of the common calibers talked about here.

It’s a very good thing. The more popular and abundant the consumables, the better; the fun part is the actual shooting.

Conversely, a more-exotic chambering that means being stuck with a limited selection of expensive, difficult-to-source cartridges is not really my idea of fun.

Could well be. I don't know. I only ever comment on the very few calibres I've actually fired myself. Too many people are "experts" on calibres they've never shot.
Very true.

One good thing with being a club shooter is you generally get tor try lots of calibre and models of rifle, though not on deer obviously.

Other than 100 grain and copper the 243win will do everything deer wise in the UK ! No BS no 3rd hand experiance , i shot one for 20 years on deer . Had plenty of folks tell me " but it wont do xxxxxx " A few admited they hadnt actually ever tried ! lol
Once Scottish law changes as promised i very well might be ready for looking towards a new barrel again and there is a fair likelyhood it might end up 243 again .

Yes sir, shot all my reds on the open hill with 243. No problems at all.
Shot foxes too 300yds. No problem, even a few crows and rabbits.
Only owned two rifles though. A plastic stocked stainless Remington which was pants and a pencil barreled weatherby vanguard which was fantastic. As a party trick I would put another hole in a steel gate post at 200yds off hand regularly!
Good times....

My .243 seems happy with 100gr Federals TBH. 2 CWDs on Monday with soft points. Only put those, Norma 100s and 75 gr Vmax through it so far but hasn’t been fussy at all. Haven’t needed to try a copper solution yet though…….

It would be with a lighter bullet and more significant charge…that’s a fairly sedate load…

Puts a fair hole in things though!
Absolutely. That’s the genuinely first time I’ve seen anyone claim that the .30-06 doesn’t shoot flatter than the .308. It’s not a massive difference or anything, but 14% more power isn’t nothing, either.
