Best fuel efficient cars or SUV/truck for Stalkers

I'm on mud terrains and carefully driven on country roads were speed is not really a good idea I'm still getting that sort of milage .but mind I'm taking my time forty max .going to all terrains soon as not really needing my MTs as using a quad these days .but my son is a keeper with a new Hilux and the milage is shocking

Last year, I bought a new hilux. My father bought a new L200 a few weeks later and he reckons he gets 38mpg where I get 27. I have BFG ATs and he’s on road tyres. I don’t think he drives to sensibly either. I drive it like I stole it. If I go to Argyll I can get 32 out of it because im stuck behind stuff doing 45mph and the best I’ve ever had was 34ish for a whole tank.

I don’t think he drives to sensibly either. I drive it like I stole it. If I go to Argyll I can get 32 out of it because im stuck behind stuff doing 45mph and the best I’ve ever had was 34ish for a whole tank.

I can get my new Hilux in the 40s mpg on a long trip. But I kept it on road tyres. I was on muds on my last vehicle but the penny dropped that I don't need them and you are just paying in fuel because most people get Ats or Muds to look good.

Ive got a vw toureg which will give slightly better returns on mpg over a pickup but as a family car it excells its massive inside including the boot and has more toys in it than toys r us and whilst i must admidt its to nice to throw at seriously rutty track where i have taken it off road its been fine plus the 3ltr v6 will propell you from 0-60 in a little over 6 seconds which is always nice!

I’ve just ( well early July) got a 2015 plate Escape model 3ltr V6…… it’s lush and quick and brilliant off-road ( I’ve put four Falken Wildpeak ATs on it) with a proper low ratio and diff locks….

But I’m only getting 28mpg…. Still I love it

I've had the Hilux, the L200 and now have a Ranger, all are terrible on fuel even with the new 2L ecoblue engine. My neighbour, who is in his late 70's, and likes to drive where most would walk, absolutely swears by his Daihatsu Terios. 1.5l engine and will go anywhere. Virtually zero overhang on either end, short wheel base and a reasonable boot space if you dont need rear seats. Most of the local farmers have adopted them as farm trucks. Only issue is if you do any serious fording the thing just floats away as its so light.

Yes, there is no such thing as a vehicle that does it all, keeping a spare one just for stalking gets expensive on tax & insurance plus maintenance. Use your legs more and get a small trailer with a plastic sheet cover like the material that 40 footers use for the carcasses? Chain the trailer onto a hard object when stalking as it is in the UK, BTW you don't need to do this in other countries.

I use my VW Passat Alltrack
50-52mpg and 180bhp (remapped for better fuel economy)

With it being the estate it holds a hell of a lot of kit if need be, and I can still fit a stag in the back

When it needs fuel, it needs fuel simples...avg 32-34mpg, goes anywhere which is a bonus.

Do you still need to drive everywhere with the window open though to give you elbow room?

Yeah, most people just buy pick ups to look good! I actually use mine and need ATs as a minimum.

I bought the base spec hilux instead of the top spec one and bought a Mercedes A class with the change. If I go anywhere I don’t need the truck, I go in the merc.

It may sound a little odd, but I have the Ford ranger for most stuff shooting/farm/work related, but at 24mpg it’s a guzzler.
Couple yr back I bought the Mrs the Skoda octavia scout off here, for soft off road farm work and her daily commute.
I’m so impressed with it, nearly always returns 50 plus mpg, drives lovely, huge boot, takes 3 dogs and all my kit plus deer. All the mod cons, and with decent tyres it’s not like my pickup with mud tyres, but certainly no slouch either.

I must agee, had a Octavia scout, one of the best cars I’ve had. Great mpg, massive boot ( bigger than my Touareg) and got me everywhere I wanted to go in it. Touareg gives my 36-38mpg on the motor way and average 28-29 with country driving in the hills on AT tyres. It is very capable with 2 locking differentials and low range ( escape edition) and keeps up with hilux etc off road when I have taken it.

A forestry agent drove me round a forest in an Octavia Scout. I was well impressed. There was a small tree fallen over the road and he just drove over it! Really nice cars.

Totally agree when I get another truck will be L200 without as doubt I drove home last night from town to my house ten miles and my truck was up to 38 when I pulled up at the door .so anyone out there Hilux make sure you have plenty of fuel money

Looks like your key issues in selecting a vehicle are stalking and good MPG, you don't list what else is important to you. For me I would want 4WD to ensure use on off road access roads and forestry tracks. If you are on a budget the comment of a van with a quad bike seems a good idea. I recently drove all the pick ups in the market and the Subaru offerings. I have to admit that MPG was not my key factor, nor was price. I wanted a vehicle that would be comfortable on long journeys but something that would also tow and allow deer to be help in a separate area than inside the vehicle. I liked the Isuzu pick up but felt that it needed just a little more power if I was going to be doing long journeys and some heavy towing. In the end I opted for a Toyota pick up (2.8 Auto), I love the vehicle, it's comfortable on the road, very capable off the road and gets about 31mpg in the first 2,000 miles. I have experience with Subaru Outbacks and think they are a great comfortable and well performing 4wd option. If I was buying a pick up on a budget the Isuzu was great value.

Personal choice my friend when I get to farms they are all joined on to eachother I use my quad which is stored in shed saves all the mess on a nice pickup the mpg is not an issue for me as I live more or less were I stalk .my friend who travel to me one in a while for a stalk has the izuzu and he gets the same milage .I just hate paying top price for fuel and it's not I can't afford it but good fuel economy it great .as I said my son has brand new Toyota and has had problems with it and fuel wow .but then again it's a work truck for him so it's abused but the best thing I ever done was buy the quad

I think they can buy 4x4 versions of the Partners and Berlingos in France. Over here the AT models with some sort of limited slip diff on the front is available
A quad on a trailer makes sense to me!

Discovery 4 is a good option, more than capable enough off road, comfy, plenty power to tow, some are ultra reliable and others are less so! Picking them up for decent money now.

Ive got a escape model and im getting about the same mpg as you on day to day runs and mid to low 30's on a run

Over the last 30 years I have used all sorts of vehicles, normal 4x4s are great but you can't get the smell out of them so I went to 4 door pickups first an Isuzu rodeo cracking truck a bit commercial and 31 mpg it was replaced 18 months ago by a a VW Amorak what a cracking tool 36 to the gallon I have had 42 mpg and all the comfort in the world and will go anywhere central diff lock and rear axle diff lock.

Now a Skoda Karol 4x4 had a duster 4x4 before and loved it, both give 45 mpg on and off road just one is more plush. The duster was great off road the Karoo does it by computer but doesn’t seem as much fun at the time, put a trailer on and keep the car clean.
