Are you sure about a British FAC or SGC being accepted as an alternative to a permis.

Armurerie de la Bourse in Paris would also not even accept a European Firearms Pass to buy ammunition. Nor component empty metallic cases. The law in France is clear an EFP was not a valid "alternative" document to what was required for both live ammunition and component cases.

Really interesting point in Post 11 about high-viz: my impression is that more Federations are enforcing this now: it has always been the rule where I shoot boar but, in a different departement, it was strictly enforced last weekend: guns and beaters alike. I even saw the son of one of the guns publically sent back to the house to get his, which was quite chastening for him.

I have to say that I would never have expected to shoot driven birds wearing high-viz but, having done it, it is a real game-changer in terms of safety: you can easily see your neighbouring guns, even in dense woods, and the beaters are visible much further away. So, a real plus for situational awareness and safety, and the bag did not seem at all affected.

When I've shot in Normandy the president of the hunt checked that everyone was wearing hi-viz when he gave the safety briefing. Heaven help anyone trying to slack in this area, he simply gave them a few minutes to resolve the issue or they got their marching orders. I was very impressed by their attitude to safety, far more stringent than I've witnessed on several shoots in this country.

Can you give me details of this shoot as I am interested. What did you shoot with? I actually have a permis de chasse although this year I only validated it for my own department (Dordogne) where I am a member of our local hunt. Last year I shot my first wild boar using a 12 g and a single slug

I have looked it up and you need a permis (your UK equivalent should suffice) and a current validation or one from the previous year and a piece of ID, in our case a passport.

In practice I buy mine off the Internet, send scans of your documents and it's delivered by the postman.

Or ask someone to get it for you!

The temporary validations are relatively expensive, if you plan more than one trip you are better off getting an annual one and job done.

I don't think we in the UK are in any position to make comments on the complexity of other countries' firearms and hunting legislation...

I am a French resident and have been for 10 years, it never ceases to amaze me how the French make everything so complicated, a fact that most French are happy to acknowledge.

I also picked up today that hi viz is soon to be a legal requirement throughout the country.

Email the French embassy - I have found them to be extremely helpful in the past, and will direct you to the correct department.

I was surprised to learn that following Brexit it is actually easier to travel here with arms, in that the UK FAC or shotgun permit is accepted without a European Firearms Pass. In addition, although nobody seems to have been asked for it, strictly speaking you also need a letter of invitation if you are travelling with an EFP whereas you don't if you are coming from outside the EU.

Basically you need your FAC and a letter of invitation from your final destination.
