Rat Gun - FAC or 12 ft/lb

Hi Smelly
I had been out time and again with the rifle but i could not shoot them in the brambles etc so had to wait - My average was perhaps only 6/7 a night
The shotgun has transformed things for me - and them !
I use coffee grounds mixed with split corn laid in front of a hedge, they love it brings their head out of the brambles, leave it down and top on the next visit does the job and organic, just right for the air gun range

A 12ft-lb rifle will do the job well but the best combination I've ever used on rats is my FX Crown turned down to Low which is then running at 18ft-lbs and using JSB Jumbo Heavy pellets (18.13gr).
This stops them in their tracks.
I use the air arms field heavy which I think are essentially the same pellet, run it at 32 ft-lb though as my BSA S10 isn’t adjustable!

Morning Mike
your FX can you wind it back to 12 ft lb or is 18 FP the lowest you can reduce

cheers
phil

Most of the rats I shoot are using the rafters of grain barns as highways so definitely want pellets staying within the carcass - not damaging the roof beyond!😆🤣

Nothing more satisfying than a good session ratting though!

I agree !
My neighbour has seen - and heard - all the shooting in my woods these last few evenings - I do text them and advise them out out also - And has asked if we can go and sort them in his chicken sheds

A job for the air guns tonight

a 15 ftlb .22 with lead is ideal ! is it worth having that on ticket over a 12 ftlb one ? only you can decide that ( you will of course find it devalued once on ticket) . Anything over that it too much a problem than a help .
I have btw done a whole heap of clearing barns of feral pigeon and knocking back rat populations in this situation . I tried 24-32 ftb in pcp , more of a liability and flatter trajectory really isnt needed on pigeon as mainly your shooting up ( drop is the horizontal distance traveled not the length of the flight path ) What you need is the extra whack when you are offered a poor pentation of the bird . A shot into the back kills quicker than one square on the chest , head and neck is the best of all..
Wear safety specs to help if you do get a bouce back or a pigeon in the face and wear a mask to protect yourself from pigeon dander getting into your lungs ( C-pap isnt nice when fighting for your life in hospital )

i use a sub 12 ft pound hw100kt with a pard 007 nv unit, .22 hades pellets, have taken thousands of rats and feral pigeons with it with no problem
I do have an fac air rifle also, but not required for rats as range is usually short, handy for rabbits when .22 lr is not suitable though

yep the multi poundage sounds pretty versatile piece of kit, with my insurance and RA MS each year however i have to have the poundage checked, certificated and placed on my insurance and RAMS documentation the same as all my sect 1 and 2 firearms ammunition, some knee jerk customers do have them checked by external H&S experts  each year
i’m not sure if a variable FAC PCP would fit in with all that shite
it would be a handy piece of kit

An HW100 is fast looking like the solution, particularly as my main requirement is short distance around farm buildings.
They are a good rifle. Really fast cycling the pellet. Easier than a 410. The wife's s510 is good. Similar design on the lever action. Again fac and way much for buildings.
Only downside is a hw100 is a complicated rifle. S410 you can strip easy to fix yourself.
If I was ratting like I was I'd buy another hw100 straight away. Great rifle

Thanks, great feedback, this is exactly the combination I’m going to put together, HW100 and a Pard 007 which is clear a strong combination based on all the feedback here.

Perfect combination. Just be aware the 12mm Pard is more suited to ratting than the 16mm (12mm has wider FOV). The 12mm coupled with a Hawke 3-12x44 SF Vantage on a HW100 is good, although the new HIKmicro A50T on a HW100 is nothing short of superb (wide FOV and excellent image). I've shot many thousands of rats with my HW100's/Hawke 3-12x44SF Vantage/Pard 12mm NV007 combination so speak with a fair bit of experience. All sub 12ft lb.
