Does it have to say Ackley Improved on a slot on your FAC to have one?

If you have a slot for a chambering on your FAC can you get an Ackley Improved version of that slot or does the slot need to say Ackley Improved? ie if you have a slot for a .243 could you get a .243 Ackley Improved?

AFAIK .243 should be sufficient - Ring your FEO or if they are unreachable ring a dealer and ask their advice. The differences between a standard and an AI are so minuscule I cannot see it being required. It's just the shoulder shape.

I have had several Ackleys and never had the word Ackley on my ticket, just .22.250 and 6mm. Only one or two calibres offer any significant benefit when fireformed to Ackley .22.250 and 6mm REM being 2 of the best.

As explained to me by an FEO some time ago, you could buy one (same as just having a 6mm rifle (unspecific) one - which I do, enabling the purchase of what you fancy) then it is entered as eg 243AI. You can also buy bog standard 243 ammo as it just gets blown out.

For other non generic listings it would need a further variation for ammo allowance ie in my case get 6xc or 6cm or 6Rem depending on what was purchased. You still have to declare to FLD as does RFD so it gets captured.

I have no idea if this advice is still good, just what was reiterated around 7/8 years ago.

They are being ultra specific up here just now.
I wanted 6mm but was told the needed the exact calibre I was going to buy. Before I had bought it , which was a pain in the arse.

Cheers everyone. I seemed to remember it wouldn't have to say AI explicitly but I couldn't remember where I'd read it.

Much appreciated.

Don’t beat yourself up for asking. Like many things in life it’s not a problem until it becomes one!

Just imagine:
a. RFD sells you a 243 Ackley against a 243 (Winchester) authority to acquire as detailed on your FAC.
b. Your friendly but diligent FEO undertakes a “home visit” as part of your first post rifle purchase FAC renewal or - heaven forbid - an unannounced “spot security check” or some such.
c. FEO seeks clarity in why said rifle has a “243 Ackley” stamping and not simply 243 Winchester.

What happens next is clearly unknown!

I’ve got 2 6mmAI there running a 87gr v-max 3670fps at the muzzle.

When I wanted my rifle I rang Leics Firearms for advice and they told me not to limit myself to just a .223 and to just write down .22 centrefire, as that would give me more choice. Got my license with .22CF and when I got to my RFD they had never seen it written like that. So a phonecall was made to Firearms, and they clarified that it's the way they do it now. So I had the choice from a hornet up to a swift. Much easier. Put down the calibre not the chambering.

Exactly the opposite up here.
They used to issue as you say but no more
They were pretty firm on it when I pushed as well.

Not fully decided on whether to get an AI or not. Variation is in and I have thought occasionally about getting an AI rather than what I've asked for. It will be a stalking rifle so I want it to feed flawlessly so I'm probably going to stick to that, but there's the little voice that says "an extra 150fps would be nice"

I have a .223 rem that was Ackley’ d . No variation as your only changing shoulder angle

Mine is throated for 80 grn Amax and will spit the little buggers out at 3000 fps from 24’ bartilen barrel .

They will know as soon as informed ie within 7 days.

But for OP peace of mind - a friendly chat with FEO will confirm what he/dept wants.

To be honest its no biggy-at most a 1-1 and holding it at RFD until paperwork arrives.

My experience of sensible FEOs is they are reasonable and will just do whichever paperwork required.

The side question is - is AI really worth it unless you are getting a bargain?

I have a 243 ackley, licence says 243. Chap i brought the rifle from (a good friend) had the same on his licence and was told it was fine.

What exactly does it need to be worth?

If you reload then an ackley is no more hassle than the standard case and it will also shoot the standard factory cartridge too if you need too. In fact that’s one good way of fireforming cases (I’m currently doing so with some very cheap Norma fmj). Depending on charge weight your standard load can be used for forming and will likely be nearly as accurate, certainly sub moa and useable.

150 fps increase is the kind of increase people step up a cartridge for! Just look at creedmoor and PRC.

You don’t need ackley on your certificate as they will still chamber and fire the standard round, same applies to k-hornet.

@angusb1 I'm the same force as you, you’ll be fine. And do it, Ackley for the win!
