25-06, any good?

Awesome! That's exactly my thinking, just don't understand why its so underrated and misunderstand 😄
My honest view on that is that, unlike say .308, it was never picked up by the target shooting crew and therefore has always remained a hunting only cartridge.

It lacks a long heavy for caliber bullet with a good BC, and even though there are makers starting to produce them you need a 1:7 twist to stabilise them, and I don’t think you can get 1:7 .25-06 barrels outside of custom rifle makers. Plus as a target round it’s thirsty on powder (50-55gn of powder for .25-06 as opposed to 40-45 for .308 or the creedmoor) which further reduces its attractiveness for target shooting.

Basically it’s issue is obscurity, especially when you compare it to all the marketing that went into the 6.5cm.

Love mine. I have a Sako 85 SS and for 10 years it was my only rifle. I have shot ITRO 1000 deer with it, probably 70% being munties but the rest split between the other 5 species. Prefer partitions to Accubonds but it puts everything away with minimal meat damage. SSTs did however damage badly. I still have mine and will probably shoot 100 deer with it over the next year up to and including Norfolk stags. I've never felt under gunned.

It’s my go to calibre. Other than a limited choice in factory rounds, other than that I struggle to see any negatives!

There are none. Can take all the largest deer species with ease. It has been used successfully in africa also.

Great calibre, I used a sako 75 in this chambering for a decade and culled quite a few with it. The plus points have been covered well already, I found it smooth to shoot and hard hitting on everything from munties to rutting red/sika stags.

The reason I got rid (actually rebarreled in 6.5) is due to a bit of ground I shoot going non lead-and subsequently another bit has gone that way. Being slightly off piste as a chambering it’s really difficult to feed non lead, brutally expensive factory if you can find it, reloading there isn’t the options and they’re hard to find. This might of changed now but was the case at the time. It’s a shame, one hell of a performer.

I keep scrolling through thread as I’ve had an itch for a particular rifle that is chambered in .25-06. But does it do anything the .270 doesn’t? You can even load the .270 down to 110 grains.

Speaking as someone who is happy to be convinced of another rifle.

Some have loaded the 270 down as far as 90g I believe. At the end of the day the 30-06 is the parent of the both of them and it's a preference as to whatever one wants. I think it's the parent that you could be convinced on if you dont already have one. It is the most versitile cal ever made that others cant match from top end to bottom end in my opinion. 30-06 load down to 110g and up to 230g. Now thats one hell of a range covered from varmint to Cape Buffalo. Effectively.

I had a .25-06 but didnt like it. Maybe because I had a 22'' barrel I wasnt getting the best out of it. Have hunted with the .257 Weatherby which was a good round, and I would have that in preference in that bore size. I felt for Uk species it was no better than a .243 for smaller species and not as good as a larger cal on teh bigger species. Would prefer a 6.5 or 7mm for reds.

Shot placement they're all more than capable for reds. 222 is a master of reds.

Well I’ve been tempted by a .30-06 as well.. Mind you. The .270 “ain’t broke”.

.222 is a fine caliber. That one is staying

I have two 25-06's. Tikka t3 lite with a 20inch barrel extremely accurate with factory 117gr federal 👌. The other is a sako 75 with a 24inch louter walter barrel it shoots everything I had put in it and that was a surprise. Taken a lot of fallow and sika with them. Meat damage can be an issue I don't mind it is all for home consumption and my dog are happy too 😊.
