Greetings all,

Recently i come across a lovely rifle chamber in 25-06.
It's a unusual cal, have anyone use/own one?

What is your take on it?
Good/bad?

Is it like a 30-06 but chamber in a smaller cal?

There's some must like it despite that with equal length barrels a 130 grain bullet in the .270 is quicker than a 120 grain bullet in a .25/06 and with a 100 grain bullet the .243 Winchester is about the same. The .25/06 is a "niche" cartridge. But in that niche it does the job it does extremely well. The question the OP needs to ask is that niche sufficiently adequate for his needs?

What do you want to do with it? ~Muir
Bisley for gallery - love the rifle. It's a Ruger no1.

But wanted to see what others experience has been like, as i only have come across this cal last week lol

I've had one a couple of decades ago. It's fast, can certainly kill deer well but compared to 6.5's and 7mm's there is poor bullet choice and poor bullet bc.

Very elegantly put sir, and being that 'niche cartridge. I'm guessing the ammo will be a bit more difficult to find?

Will ir be expensive? Only if you're the buyer! If you're the seller it won't be worth jack. No demand you see...

I'd have one. It was easier to find a 2nd hand 270 Win though so that's what I ended up with.

25-06 with a 80 or 100gr Barnes TTSX or similar would be perfect for UK deer.

Yes, at 3200fps that's what grab my attention

But i can appreciate it's no match for a 6.5 or 7mm. Completely different class

Excellent, thank you for the recommendation. Will begin the search tomorrow morning (80-100gr)

You waited until you heard what you wanted to hear.
The sorriest killings of deer I ever saw was three deer shot with 25-06. That was not to say it was the cartridge's fault. Wrong bullet choice, I'm certain, in at least two cases.
I'm not certain I'd buy one in a Ruger #1. Beautiful looking but can be a pain to get shooting correctly depending on the vintage of gun.~Muir

Great cartridge

Needs the right bulket and certainly 100-120 for deer from my experience

No 1 can be finicky to get accurate consistently

Suggest shoot before buying if possible

I’ve had a covey of 25-06 rifles of which two were Ruger #1’s . One was a #1B that I killed several deer with using Nosler 100 grain and 115 grain Ballistic Tip handloads . The other was a #1V that I killed a bunch a groundhogs with using Sierra 87 grain handloads . Had a Remington 700 Sendero Stainless Fluted that was a tack driver with Sierra 87 grainers it would keep five in 1/4” at 100 yards with regularity . I had a couple that didn’t shoot that great but most all did very well .

Whoever shot those deer suck at shooting. I’ve killed a truck bed full of deer with a 25-06 and a 257 ackley. Throw a 110 accubond In there and they r very deadly. They’ve never taken more than a few steps. Here in the US manufacturers are starting to make fast twist 25 cals for heavier bullets. They r pretty slick.

In a round about way it’s kinda funny as I’m a 25-06 advocate . But at present I don’t own one , I however do own a 6mm-06 and a 6.5-06 . The 6mm-06 is kinda a specialty item it has a 1:7.5 Hawk Hill Custom stainless barrel bought expressly to shoot the Berger 6mm 115 grain Match Hunting bullet . And it works but let’s be honest I whitetail deer is not hard to kill if you put the bullet in the appropriate spot nuff said . Buck in the pics was plugged with the 6mm-06 this past season .AA716824-8861-4604-8292-E403DFA9018C.webpF76A86D4-A1CC-4400-976A-C2A05F78D7FC.webp

Anything does anything with a proper shot. That will do anything you require, on reds and especially all the little deer you've got.

My brother shot .25-06 for a while, I never saw the benifit over my .30-06 personally.

Not anymore!
