BB Caps & CB Caps

I don’t suppose anybody’s interested but I did a bit of testing with some .22 rimfire caps over the chronograph and on targets at 10, 15 and 20 yards. First job was to clip in the single shot sledge in place of the regular magazine, as there’s no way that these little things will load from a magazine. Over the chrono the rws BB Caps returned a surprising 887.9fps for 28ft lbs energy. The heavier rws CB Caps were even faster at 954.7fps and 36.4ft lbs energy. I also tried some Sellior & Bellot CB Caps, these were a bit slower at 815.8fps and 26.5ft lbs energy. All three types of cap punched clean through 1 inch wooden board so they hit a lot harder than their looks might suggest. I fired three shot groups of each type at the targets but ran out of the rws CB Caps on the 20 yard target, although the one shot fired did hit pretty much where it was aimed. At ten yards all three shot five pence sized groups. At fifteen yards the third shot with the S&B’s sounded quite a bit louder than the others and hit high. Three shot group with the BB Caps could still be covered by a penny. These opened up to two pence sized groups at twenty yards. I don’t know what happened to the third S&B at twenty yards, no sign of it on target, unless two shots went through the same hole? Unlikely. These were shot from a short 13:1/2 inch barrel and gives and idea what to expect from these little things. I don’t imagine anybody’s still reading this by now, but here’s some pictures to bore you even more….😁sorry.

I find it interesting! Where did you get these from?! I’ve looked time and again but couldn’t find any, has been a fair while since I last looked though.

I tried some .22 shorts and some CB longs in the past. They were both terrible, as in around a 5” plus group at around 15-20 yards!!

I was given song longs shorts and rws CB caps recently and they shot really well out of the Ruger except for a fiddle loading and lousy primary extraction so I passed them on but yeah they were surpringly good.
My last bolt action cz 457 in 22 handled shorts from the mag just fine.

I wish they still did HV longs I do.

Interesting wee things. I'm surprised by how powerful they are given their size, certainly would not like to get hit by one!

I would say they are more of a novelty type thing now, their place in hunting/target I would imgine have been greatly overtaken by Air guns.

The original rimfire cartridges known as Flobert after the inventor. Developed for indoor target shooting in the mid 19th entry using "Parlor Guns", usually in 6mm or 9mm. No propellant in the case only priming compound of the rim. Used to be popular with terriermen when digging out for the local Hunt. I used them for several years to despatch "captive fox", before they became difficult to source and I moved to .32ACP. At short range BB/CB will easily penetrate 1 1/2" inch of wood.

Like Farmerjoe I too find your arrival really quite interesting Mr.Basher! I have been trying to source some of those myself for several years now, and looking for HP variant .22 ‘Shorts’ too , especially those by either Winchester or CCI…??
I used to use RWS 29gr HP Shorts at night out lamping for rabbit and found them both to be excellent but about 10 or so years back I developed cancer and didn’t go shooting for a couple of years, then when I got back into it again - chuffed as nuts that I was again able to get out and involve myself in one of my most favoured hobbies I found that my supplier had stopped stocking them and I just haven’t found any other provider ANYWHERE in this ‘Green and Wondrous Land’…..?? I have dug about all over the place and recently (early in 2023) managed to find a very limited supply of S&B 29gr Solids in .22 Short, but their general accuracy and reliability in my little Anschutz bolt action sporter (which does Stirling service with virtually most regular .22 LR rounds if they are quality) was absolutely AWFUL!!!

Do you ;or anybody else who might read this) know of anywhere in the UK that might be able to supply me with a few hundred .22 HVHP Shorts please? preferably those made by CCI or RWS??

Thanks for at least reading this so far,

ATB, Blobby159.

I’ve sent you a PM Blobby👍

It’ll be old stock now for hvhp .22 shorts I reckon. The only .22 shorts fairly easily available at the moment to my knowledge are rws and s&b, both solid and both subsonic. The rws being the better of the two running at around 60ft lbs but they’re a tad expensive for what they are. The s&b’s are dirt cheap but ok for short range rats and squirrels etc, probably manufactured as fairground fodder? I’d like to happen on some of the Winchester hv shorts though😉👍
