Opinions on .22 WMR options?

Afternoon all,

I'm coming to the end of a batch of 22wmr Remington Premier V-Max, which, are no longer available.

I wondered if anyone had any experience with this calibre and could lend an opinion.

I've been looking at the Hornaday V-Max as a possible substitute, but what are people's experience of these?

Thanks in advance 👍

federal premium with Speer tnt hollow point - like a hollow point plus, with slits down the jacket to maximise expansion. 30gr I think. They dump all their energy in the target, and on an adult rabbit very very rarely pass through on a chest shot. They’re great - assuming you don’t want the meat and it’s just pest control.

I found the Hornady a bit tough but it worked.

To be honest, any wmr bullet in the boiler room will down anything that can be shot with a wmr.
One of my favourite rounds was the old CCI 30gn.

Funny you should say. I can't believe I didn't think of it before and was just dumping the rabbits in the hedge, but the new plan is to grind them and use to feed the dogs. Raw dog food for three dogs is costing a small fortune!

V-MAX accurate and explosive out to 100 yds. Bit prone to wind deflection. The Hornady critical defence 45 grainers are accurate but pedestrian, 1700 fps compared to the V-MAX 2200 fps.
Shooting out of a CZ457 Varmint, I no longer have the CZ 457 Royal.

I need something that hits foxes hard. I think I'm going to have to try different stuff and see what I like. If I get on with Hornady I'll look no further, but opinion seems to be varied if I'm honest. No clear choice from users!

After years shooting foxes with wmr and hmr there is nothing in it.
If you want to hit foxes hard as you put it get a center fire.
If you want to be able to hit foxes anywhere pretty much as apposed to the requirement to surgically placing a rimfire bullet get a center fire.
Pretty much all foxes shot with a rimfire go on a death run. Some don't like it, I don't have an issue with it. The danger is it encourages some to believe the answer is head shooting.
I do not recommend it. It can lead to suffering and is not fair. Sometimes it's the only option but I try to avoid it. A chest shot though will kill them quickly. Sometimes though you may need a dog to find them. Hey, I've seen a dog required to find foxes shot with a center fire!

Yeah, tell me about it! I shot one a few months ago in the front of the chest. It rolled over and its little feet were twitching away. "That's toast" I thought, gathered up my stuff and walked over to where it was shot... gone! Unbelievable 🙄
I'm getting a centre fire as well, but right now, I have to use what I've got 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's dead though, that's the main thing....it's also why I send a second round free of charge!

+1 one for these rounds, available at most rfd's, use them on fox and rabbits perfect round for both in 22 wmr/22 mag rimfire.

got one juvenile fox a few weeks back 25yd dropped on the spot with one in the bib.

Hello Dave,

As far as I am aware Remington still make the 33gr Premier Accutip-V round for 22 wmr?

You should be able to still get hold of it
