I'm on with buying a quad for getting about the fields while mole trapping .rabbiting etc so nothing heavy.not having any experience with them what would be a good handy size.engine wise and build.also what make is the most reliable. Thanks for the comments lads
 
Spooky - I’m probably going to grave having only owned one quad and guess what…… it’s a Honda TRX 420👍 Out on the shoot yesterday after a couple of months of inactivity and it didn’t miss a beat.

Boy did I luck in when I took the plunge - I doubt you’ll regret it too :thumb:

Anything will do that to be honest. Even an older 2wd model may be fine depending on how wet / steep your ground is.

What's your budget? New or secondhand? Secondhand private sales are a minefield though, so be careful!

Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha seem to have decent reputation for reliability. I recently went Honda 520 new because the secondhand market around here was crazy. New stock was very limited so no one was selling old bikes and those that were up for sale were bonkers money. I ordered a 420 originally but was so delayed the dealership did me a decent price on a 520. Expensive luxury but didn't half make it easy to get extract a 140kg (larder weight) red stag last week on my own.
 
I have had owned 4 Suzuki's two 250 2 wheel drive and two 300 king quad all singing and dancing 4x4 high low super low gears and diff lock. I still have a 250 Ozark.

One honda and one Kawasaki both 2 wheel drive
 
What @75 said. We keep being offered stupid money to trade our Honda in, so that is something to think about - although like everything else new prices have also gone up.

We tend to go for smaller engine sizes as the big ones are more desirable to our brand of thieves and scumbags (Bradford postcode). 4wd is handy in wet holes, power steering and semi auto boxes are nice to have but are another thing to go wrong. Older models suffer less from restrictive emissions problems but are by nature older and perhaps more likely to need expensive work.

Depending where you live, though I presume it's the same everywhere, have a think about security. Our neighbour had a quad nicked while he hopped off to check a mole trap, and most farms round here have had one pinched in the last five years. Ours hasn't been yet but we have the most layers of security compared to our neighbours - no doubt they will succeed eventually.
 
I use a TRX350 4x4, it’s an older model now (20 years old!) but they are very well built, apart from the frames. They all seem to have frames that rust too easily.

You’ll pick up one from £1500 to £2500 but beware, some have been hard used.

I try to look after mine and it is serving me well, very capable machine. Obviously the newer ones are better machines but the older models will still do all you need.

The TrX’s are small enough to lift out of trouble if needed, where as some big monstrosities seem to be built to be as big as possible - not always a good thing!

Honda as they are proven to last and take a battering.

For what you want it for the 350 should suffice, don't go bigger than the 420 as, if it rolls you won't be able to upright on your own (especially if you are trapped underneath!)

It's not easy to find any data on the Honda 420 vs 520 weights but Honda NZ website gives them as:

420TRX - 286kg
520TRX - 297kg

I assume they are the same or very similar spec in the UK. They are certainly the same frame and overall dimensions here so I wouldn't rule out the bigger bike on the very unlikely basis that you may one day need to roll it off yourself. Try not to tip it and it you do, 11kgs isn't going to make any difference to the outcome.
 
Something to factor in is if you need to trailer it will it need a bigger trailer because of the length or the width.
My grizzly fits a treat but a mates Kawasaki needs a bigger trailer.

I have a king quad 300, why did you get rid of the two? They're incredible machines with mechanical levers so not much to go wrong. The ability to lock all 4 wheels and go into super low range makes them unstoppable, they are also light enough to man handle and fit in a small quad.
