Mucked up my renewal - going to be expensive

Poor performance on your firearms officer/police force I got notification months before the expiry date from Police scotland
Sussex definitely always used to send out reminders as the management was previously of the mind that sending a letter helped people stay the right side of the law and for the sake of an automated letter and cost of a stamp it them saved having to send police officers and/or FEOs round to seize firearms and having lots of certificate holders in unlawful possession, not to mention the added work of completing an initial grant rather than a renewal.

Maybe it's a new theme from the upper management of "it's your responsibility, not ours" and means they get to reduce the number of certificate holders and look tough on reducing gun numbers?🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s still the case in my bit of Sussex but oddly enough two towns away it’s not

Forget to MOT your car, renew insurance etc etc, modern life requires some administration from each of us.

While I sympathise, it's the Police that you need to engage with.

Seen from afar, but did he not say he submitted his application before the current permit expired? As a letter of the law issue, he has complied with the necessary calendar to dodge a new application. I appreciate that it is close to the shut off point, but it isn't past it.

It would seem that a section 7 is the reasonable thing, as his application can still be refused should the FEO decide to make a point about tardiness.

No real comparison you can renew all those on the day they expire a driving licence or passport would be a better choice.

Look to be a few issues here, the first is whether the OP has to re-apply or can renew and the second is about what happens after his current certificate expires and before the new one is granted.

As to the first, if the application is in before the expiry (however little time that may be) it should be a renewal.

It’s the second issue where the 8 weeks matters. If you make your renewal application with at least 8 weeks remaining on your current certificate then you get an automatic 8 week extension to your current license. If you’re late, you don’t and you have no “cover” after the existing expiry date. I don’t believe your FLD has any discretion over this as it’s a statutory provision. As the OP is outside the 8 weeks, he gets no extension.

That means the only way to retain possession is via a s7 permit. I believe your FLD have more discretion here but that many have a policy of only granting s7 permits where you qualified for the 8 week extension but that has elapsed before they sort your renewal, i.e. when the responsibility is solely on them. I can’t see that the OP can force his FLD to issue a s7 here - but clearly there’s no harm in asking.

Mines in for renewal right now. Should be OK but did get two reminders and got close to the 8 week mark as the doc took their time.

Sorry to hijack this post, but does anyone have an email address they can pass on for a Surrey/Sussex Police FEO called John?

Having done a quick Google search it pulled up a LinkedIn profile for 'John FitzGerald' so I wonder if that's the John I'm trying to speak to...

I recently moved to Surrey and I've been told my file is currently sitting with John!

Thank you.
