Last time I asked it was roughly 50:50.

Was that 50/50 of people who answered should pay a trade sub but choose not to

Its a fair question, which Alex has responded to. I would add that it takes a lot of our time up to patrol and run the site, plus an ever increasing cost. If it were down to me all classified adds would require a £1 cost to place an add, not just Traders, the vast majority of whom are honorable and pay the £10 per month.
This would stop some people from using classifieds as a sale room place, and in my opinion taking the p.ss, and selling constantly without Trade membership.

As the site membership is well in excess of 30,000 and many others dropping in to look at the site its growing fast, and some seem to think its just a place to flog stuff and make a few quid. This may change in the future.

I think that is a great idea.

I also thought about a small subscription that could be paid by anyone not wanting to see trade ads, pay your £1 per week, click a button, they are all hidden from your view.

I wouldn’t be against the £1 charge per classified add as long as it was applied to single items over a certain cost (say £25-30) as you do see some items below that and it just wouldn’t be worth it.

That would be a bit difficult to apply and control.
If you wanted to place an add in one of the paper magazines, Shooting Times, Sporting gun etc, it would cost a great deal more than £1. Besides anyone wanting to place an add on this site has the choice of putting several items in one add. Loading equipment for instance, is often more than one item in an add.

You would be surprised how many Trade and yet are reluctant to spend £10 as a trader. Although not so much these days, but we still get people thinking its all a free ride.

It would be a bit miserly to charge £1 for the numerous "free to a youngster / beginner" adverts that are part of what makes this site so good.
We wouldnt charge anyone making any free offer. We never have, never will, as far as I am concerned. That's why we never charge for anyone raising funds for any charity, in fact in most cases we contribute towards it, via the site account, or personally.

Maybe a £1 fee per £25 value advertised up to a certain value then a flat fee above £200? So £7 fee for a £175 item.

Only challenge is how to collect it.
Can’t add it to the price as then the sale would have to go through SD’s accounts, so would need a secondary charging mechanism.
Also, if you charge based on price then what happens if the price drops? You would need to collect post sale based on actual sale price and that needs administration.

Keep it simple - anything free or under a limit, say £50 is free to advertise for ‘sale’ but everything else attracts a flat fee to place the ad, irrespective of whether it sells or not.

Only fair that we contribute to the running of the site if we are equally benefiting from it.

How about having a new sub-section in the Classifieds for items being offered for free, with every other section attracting a flat fee?
I don't think that's a good idea. It would just be targeted by those members who are only here for a free ride. The ones who don't contribute anything, but are the first to post 'I'll take it!" on any free offer. Better to have those adverts mixed in with all the rest, not so easy to home in on, to give a fair opportunity to all.

Easily fixed - make the "Free" section in Classifieds only visible to those who are Supporters ;)
