Time for separate private / trade classifieds sections?

Seems like there has been a huge increase in the number of Trade Members posting new items / special offers (in SHOUTY CAPS! ;) ). I appreciate they've paid their subs and keep the site running, but UKV and other sites seem to work well with different sections for private sellers of secondhand items and Trade sellers of new items. Easier to search for stuff of interest...

Thirded.

If I want to get rid of my personally soiled underpants, I will put them in a "private" member classified.

If I want to get rid of a brand new pair of underpants, I would prefer to put them in to a "trade" member classified.

Actually, I never would, but you get the point. I hope!

+1 Also for maybe 'Sold' items to be moved to an archived section or a filter to only display items that are available for sale.

I quite liked the option we had at one time to scroll new posts without seeing classifieds. That said I do understand the forum requires the support from the trade members.

The positive position of having a Trade section is that their paid subscription would stand out more from the standard members section, and not always becoming "lost".
The same can equally be said for standard members and their posts.

while I agree with the sentiment I doubt those who paid for trade membership would be happy if their audience was more restrictive.

Of course if more were to pay the measly supporter membership the site wouldn't need to rely on trade memberships so much to simply exist

There are more reasons than just serving up Trade Members and personal ads due to the fact they've paid. Like imagine if we had double the number of Classifieds forums, the Trade Member then has to decide which forum to post in. Or are we banning the Trade Member from posting in those personal forums because they have a subscription? What happens if they have a Trade Member account but the rifle is their own second hand gun? What happens if they post in the Trade Member forum, then their Trade Member subscription runs out? etc.

We could setup a search and provide a link to the forum below? It wouldn't allow searching the link though...

This area doesn't seem too badly broken so why fix it. Just sail past the for sale (see what I did) ads if you aren't interested.

David.

For me Leave it be ! But it would be nice if the trade put the price just as we punters have too when selling items , it would save so much time .
Yep
in all honesty traders who don’t put prices ( with the exception of my Mcleods , Blackwood ,MM beatle who are proven on service and prices ) I have a tendency to not bother contacting them, I know what I want and want a realistic price don’t really want to have to leave e mails or messages waiting for a call back, I find it pretty boring to be honest, I’m the one spending the dollar gives me arse ache spending all my time trying to get a reasonable cost when it could be on the advertisement save time and energy

just saying like. :)

My advice to Amin is if it aint broke don't fix it so have a bump on me:

I think this is a good compromise as it leaves ads in the default sorting list and so allows both Trade and Personal ads to continue to be viewed but the user then has the option (like they would on most websites) to filter the content being displayed. If it's quick and easy to implement I'm all for this.

?? The reasons for splitting them are to give a better focus. If I want to see who has got new gear or deals on, then I can go to the Trade Forum and scan that without having to wade through heaps of secondhand rubbish. Equally second hand rubbish is not pushing Trade Sellers posts down off the first page. Really that's what they are paying for, and private ads are reducing the "value" of their subscription by quickly reducing its prominence.

When I am in cheapskate mode I can go to the Private Sellers section and find what I am looking for without wading through 10 million adverts for new thermal imagers that are just in.

It is the same reason you have separate Firearms, Optics, Reloading sections just segmented differently. Focus and Clarity

What's New is how it all gets mixed in.

No they only post in the Trade Members forum

Sort of; the Private ads forum is for normal punters secondhand crap. There are lots of reasons Trade should not want to be in amongst that.

In reality I think what you would be doing is giving them their own bit of the site where they can present their goods with some prominence.
What happens if they have a Trade Member account but the rifle is their own second hand gun?
Not a huge issue, eh.
What happens if they post in the Trade Member forum, then their Trade Member subscription runs out? etc.
How is that any different from the current situation? Making trade posts then their subscription runs out.

Personally I think the UKV forum's segmentation works better, but its your site.

The reason traders dont put prices is because if they did the suppliers would stop there supply

People are free to sell at whatever price they like but most wholesalers will cut off supplys to traders if they openly advertise cheap prices hence those who can do a decent price always say "contact us for best price", it stops them upsetting the wholesaler and stops other retailers complaining that they are selling to cheaply and can't compete.

If a website says POA on items or doesnt have a live stock list I basically dont buy from them.
