Best book to film production

Remains of the Day.

Not quite full ‘book to film’, but the use of the source material by by EB Sledge and Robert Leckie in the mini series ‘The Pacific’ was exceptional.

Controversial choice, but the Game of Thrones series was substantially better than the books.

Queen’s Gambit was much better than the book.

Last King of Scotland was so much better than the book it bears no comparison.

BBC adaptation of the His Dark Materials trilogy was close to flawless, and better than the book in important places.

Master and Commander.

Yes - it doesn't perfectly follow a book.

But the characters are exactly as per the books, and it's a brilliant representation of life on a small floating vessel, thousands of miles from home with only 16 inches of space you could call yours 👍
I’d forgotten that film - which is daft, really, as it is a superb film and I’ve watched it many times, and is a staple on my iPad for long flights, alongside the Matrix trilogy and Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit.

Maybe not perfectly adapted, but two entirely different treatments of the Sherlock Holmes books both carried, I thought, the spirit.

The modern “Sherlock” series with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman
And the lighthearted
Robert Downey pair of movies

Black Robe . Both the book and the film capture the time, place and how the people , from completely different cultures , interacted with each other .

I think that any film is by it's very nature a condensation of a book. It's no surprise that many of the films mentioned above involve Tom Hanks. Whether you think a book is better than the film or vice versa often depends on which you read/saw first I find.

Here's a few films I think bear comparison with the books:

The 39 Steps (1959)
Jaws (not the sequels, definitely not them)
The Godfather
A Christmas Carol/Scrooge (1951). Although the Micky Mouse version has it's aficionados.

To be honest, I wish they were making more films from books rather than comics these days.

Bury my heart at wounded knee. By Dee Brown.
Got a copy of that one.

Yes the canoe chase was superbly filmed oh and the gauntlet...the doggy was really good too lol.

Mario Puzos The Godfather is perhaps the greatest of all from book to film especially if one has that insider knowledge of being reared in Cafflick schools and colleges. Attention to detail was fantastic and captured the Corleone`s 100%

I watched a documentary on the making of the movie series, to get it past the unions (mob) given the sensitive subject in that part of the US, Coppola had to give some of the extra parts to actual mobsters. After the first film’s release members of the mob, who apparently loved Coppola’s portrayal of them, picked up on some of the sayings, in particular the “I’ll make him an offer he can’t refuse”.

Not sure it was a book but rather than start a new thread, I thought some of you would welcome the chance to catch a high-quality print of this truly cult British film c/o your BBC Licence fee:
