HSE asks for extension to timeline for lead ammunition review

Many thanks to the SD members that took the time to respond to the recent 60-day Health and Safety Executive final lead restriction proposals consultation. An update on the webpage below.

Looks like at least 60% of responses to consultation were via BASC. Dont know what that means re outcome but, putting the “voluntary” transition issue to one side, at least demonstrates some credibility for BASC.

I suspect the HSE and associated blob need more time to work things round to the pre agreed outcome : me a cynic ?

Delaying tactics by government departments generally means they are going to make a decision contrary to what the majority of respondents want. They’ll wait awhile then when the kerfuffle has died down a bit, just do what they had intended prior to any consultation anyway. “Oh yes, we’ve already consulted on that”.

Electric cars have been kicked down the alley for five years because there is no infrastructure at the moment to suupport them. The same is true of lead alternatives. Be prepared for a very long campaign before any decisions are reached.

To me it shows that the response was neither robust, convincing or delivered with strength. The overwhelming response should have been the the HSE are trying to crack a walnut with a a shledgehammer. Demonstrate the harm?

Scientifically there is a large body of evidence that demonstrates that lead ingested into the human body from whatever source is harmful. Indeed the FDA in America has just given Orphan Drug Status for new cancer treatments that are based on removing lead and other heavy metals from the body. The basis of the FDA’s approval where clinical studies on terminally ill patients. The outcomes of the treatment have been no sign of disease in vast majority treated.

The challenge that the HSE are struggling with is that is little data from the UK and there is a view in Government that any knowledge from overseas is totally irrelevant to the UK.

Thus the inference is that lead from bullets fired in the UK acts totally differently to lead in other countries.

So take the example of a safety data sheet from Barnes on their lead cored bullets. It states that lead is highly likely to be carcinogenic to humans. Data sheet attached below.

UK HSE Government view is that this only applies to Americans because biologically and Scientifically they are totally different to those in the UK.

UK Government also doesn’t want to shed light on our high levels of cancer, low diagnosis rate and low survivability especially when compared to other well developed countries.

If current opinion polls are to be believed between 93% and 97% of people will not be voting for the Green party. In fact their most vociferous supporters appear to be the BBC and the Guardian newspaper rather than any support from the general public

Only word word Barnes are worried about…Litigation.

I once bought an Autogyro in kit for from USA.
First sentences in instruction book were. ‘You can build this kit into whatever you want, but if you build a flying machine it’s guaranteed to kill you.
It’s an American thing.
Ken.

Meanwhile down at HSE headquarters....
" Well done Smythers on your handling of the lead ammunition thing.
We've decided to award you a £300,000 bonus this year and would like to celebrate with you in my club, drinks on me and here is a box of Cuban cigars, well done Smythers"

Of course Barnes are worried about litigation. Probably one of the reasons all the American ammo makers are developing and pushing lead free ammo.

There is plenty of good evidence linking lead to health problems.
