Took a stroll on one of my patches this afternoon. Followed a Muntjac buck for several minutes but no backstop so retraced steps and got into highseat
30 minutes later couple of Roe kids appear, weaving in and out of cover. I have been after these 2 and the doe for a couple times so this could be it. Squeak on the buttalo and mum then pops out, perfect broadside and backstop. Drop her with a HILAR. Kids trot off but not far, then come back to see what's happened to mum. Shoot the first one slightly quartering. It leaps up and screams. Now, after 20+years and 100s of deer I have never heard that before. It made just the same screaming sound as a roe kid a couple of weeks ago did when an RTA casualty with a broken rear leg flushed when we were game shooting, legged it and the WHV pulled it down after a short chase.
Back to the shot kid. It rattled me a bit and I thought I might have wounded it but the shot felt good. It runs off and I lose sight of it in cover. I decide to leave the other kid in case I have a wounded follow up to do. Climb down and walk across to the cover about 120 yards away. The kid made it about 20 yards into cover. The 7mm 140g Nosler BT from my Rem Mag has practically cut it in half, Both shoulders gone. Exit wound on far side about 5 inches across. Another exit via sternum which is in 3 pieces. Chest cavity a red jelly mass.
How on earth did it get a scream out?
Ever had that?
