Never had this before

Took a stroll on one of my patches this afternoon. Followed a Muntjac buck for several minutes but no backstop so retraced steps and got into highseat

30 minutes later couple of Roe kids appear, weaving in and out of cover. I have been after these 2 and the doe for a couple times so this could be it. Squeak on the buttalo and mum then pops out, perfect broadside and backstop. Drop her with a HILAR. Kids trot off but not far, then come back to see what's happened to mum. Shoot the first one slightly quartering. It leaps up and screams. Now, after 20+years and 100s of deer I have never heard that before. It made just the same screaming sound as a roe kid a couple of weeks ago did when an RTA casualty with a broken rear leg flushed when we were game shooting, legged it and the WHV pulled it down after a short chase.

Back to the shot kid. It rattled me a bit and I thought I might have wounded it but the shot felt good. It runs off and I lose sight of it in cover. I decide to leave the other kid in case I have a wounded follow up to do. Climb down and walk across to the cover about 120 yards away. The kid made it about 20 yards into cover. The 7mm 140g Nosler BT from my Rem Mag has practically cut it in half, Both shoulders gone. Exit wound on far side about 5 inches across. Another exit via sternum which is in 3 pieces. Chest cavity a red jelly mass.

How on earth did it get a scream out?

Ever had that?

Was there a specific wound pattern
The ones I remember:

1. 40m shot on alert kid, first shot in the group. 6.5CM. Shot went just in front of diaphragm, no shoulder involved, missed heart. Dropped to shot, but head up and screamed for about 15 seconds.

2. 160m on alert kid. Second shot in the group. 6.5CM. Shot went in behind near shoulder, out through far shoulder, heart destroyed. Staggered a few steps screaming, then collapsed.

3. 275m on relaxed kid. First shot in the group. 6.5PRC. Shot went high - over top of shoulder, but damaging spinal processes enough to immobilise. Dropped to shot, head up. Screamed for 20 seconds til bled out and collapsed.

They have been a few other I know, but can’t remember the exact details.

I've had a sika kid scream when shot, with the chest blown open. The worst deer scream I've heard though was a badly shot red hind on a driven hunt in Poland, she went on for a good few minutes before a beater finished her off.

I’m not criticising this thread in any way - it’s educational. Particularly if someone new is in this situation. But it’s not great PR if anyone anti hunting,(or even on the fence) reads it.
Glad it all ended up okay though and as I say, not criticising, just trying to see it from another angle.

No, but had a roe doe make a real fuss ( verbal ) when caught whilst been held with no rough treatment to warrant also caught a few red calfs that were tagged with not even a squeak.

Roe deer seem to be incredibly scream prone with live capture, same with fallow.

They make it known they've got something scary touching and or restraining them.

Fortunately not experienced it myself but I know a few people that have had the displeasure catching roe in pheasant pens, there screams are blood curdling apparently....

I shot a muntjac at about 80 yards, quartering towards me, so I opted to hit it slightly further forward than I would if broadside. Bloodcurdling scream as it fell dead on the spot. I can still hear it now. A reflex action perhaps?

Not in my experience. Shot a good few youngsters of both species after the hind / doe.
Yes,exactly, have seen with sambar calves also.

Fawns/calves have no where to go except come back to the hind/doe. Wait a while and they will turn up.
