Zulus

Looks like the latest Arken Zulu, using pip & ballistic calc on a motorway with dual crosshair & wife spy.
Hey, how about sharing your stories on the long standing thread entitled ' out last night'.
Just nipping out for a look around. Catch up later 👍🏻

I would SD, but the truth is, despite mooching around 3 nights a week, I haven't seen a fox since last September! Corns up too high now, only spud fields meadows & sugar beet to shoot on.

Nor me but tomoro will tell the tail.

Hope you noticed what I did there - tail not tale…
Anyhoo - off to the club went himself clutching his new Arkens Zulus to his manly chest. His one purpose in life was to zero and test the new toy on his beloved triple deuce (other vastly inferior chamberings are available, surprisingly) in a controlled environment i.e. off a bench.
Problem 1. Practical Pistol competition layout being set up so all ranges closed this week and sodding next.
For younger members benefit - a pistol is just like a rifle but much shorter; this makes them very challenging to hit anything with but they still are very common in places like London, Manchester and Liverpool where they are illegal but in NI they are also common but legal.
Problem 2. Plans B-Z were impromptu assorted permissions on the 30 miles trip back home but because of the incredible weather just now every farmer was making hay while…… you get the picture, the fields are quite mad. Net result nowhere, but nowhere to set up a target for an improvised not-so-controlled test. Do you know how many swear words one can mutter in 30 miles children? Foxyboy does….
Solution. Went home and ate half an apple-tart and custard neither of which I wanted or enjoyed. Now feeling quite bilious, sodding sight can wait. I need a malt….

I was going to offer you a chance on my patch but after pointing out the pistol ban over here you can sod off 🫤.
What happened to the other tart half? 😋

Will the Zulus work without a smartphone?
Yes and no
If you want to use the ballistic calculator, you will need a smartphone to send a ballistic table from the phone to the scope.
Once that is done, the phone is no longer needed
If you don't want to use the ballistic calculator or have the version of the Zulus without the rangefinder, then you don't need a smartphone
If you want to update the firmware on the scope, you will need a smartphone

Cheers

That's what I supected. My 'coal-fired' phone won't do! Don't want to carry a 'brick' worth £900 about in my pocket.

The fold-up one that EE have was £860, anything else is too bulky. I've got a Medion from Aldi, £78, but don't want to carry it about.
If it's just for use with the Zulus -once you've uploaded the Ballistic data - you don't need to carry it around.
I bought a £70 phone from Sainsbury which now has all my shooting apps/data on it. The only time i use it is to update the Zulus at home, or when I'm long range gonging at the range when Strelok Pro is handy.

My redmi note 10 was under £200 and is brilliant. Certainly does not feel like a brick and is very slim.
Some of the older type ones are more bulky.

There is no way I'd pay 800+ for a phone and it wouldn't be a Samdung, don't like them!

Latest rolling review of the Arkens Zulus having finally had the weather window to try it out real time.
1. On a dull day the Brightness adjustment needs to be at the max of 6 setting, even then it is quite dull. When the sun is out (when’s that then?) 3 or 4 is fine;
2. Battery life is excellent for daylight setting up/shooting though tonight I will be using the LRF/BC and onboard IR so we shall see (or maybe not…);
3. Battery screw cap - abysmal! Struggles to find threads - why oh why do manufacturers skimp on a component part which is obviously going to be taken off and put back on frequently? Does my head in!
4. Mount - much has been said and generous advice given as is the norm on this site. Mine came with the 35mm version which has been fine on my triple deuce but why not have a standardised mounting system to fit 11mm rails through to Picatinny? If an adapter is required why not provide one? Also see “9” below;
5. Range Finder - excellent BUT anything above 5x the RF crosshairs may disappear from the screen. If you like the PiP facility (I do) the RF crosshairs will be obscured beyond 5x - after only one week I keep mine on 5x so that I can access the RF, ping the distance and then increase the magnification if/as required;
6. Focus - as before it is very sensitive - it would be a real annoyance without fitting the Ebay “knob” (pause for schoolboy titters from the SD collective);
7. Onboard IR - excellent even on the basic setting - the Auto setting apparently reduces IR flare and looks very promising - tonight Mathew….;
8. Ballistic Calculator - only tested at 100, 130 and 150 yards today and spot on - being old skool I am not sure I will actually use it but rather default to holdover for those few occasions when it is required (NI fields are generally very small);
9. Mounts - much is made of the 26 zero settings which enable you to use the Zulus across several chamberings/rifles BUT to do so you will almost certainly require adapters from 11mm (rimfire/air) upto but excluding Picatinny and anything inbetween. Fortunately Eaglevision do a series of mounts to suit all occasions (other manufacturers are available) and I found that the basic 11mm to Picatinny worked absolutely fine on my Cogswell and Harrison (CZ ) .17hmr despite my initial concerns that a straight rail i.e. without a ejection port cut-out would foul case extraction. So big shout to the guys in Eaglevision for their help and excellent service;
10. Finally, as a graduate of the Eric Morecombe Conservatoire for Pard Users Everywhere (all the right buttons…) I particularly looked forward to using the recoil-generated record function BUT it doesn’t work on my or from what I read, other .222s. I don’t know where this function does “kick in” (!) but the manufacturers must in their project development have surely determined at which chambering/recoil level this function actually operates. To not say this up front is I feel disingenuous at least - a pity.
Soo there you have it - feedback in it’s rawest form! After one week of limited access I have been mightily impressed by the Zulus - more will follow as my fiddling journey continues….
