Africa - what can you bring back to the UK

Hi all,

I'm keen to hear from anyone whonhas recently been to Africa and what if anything you were able to bring back in the way of memento.

I am looking at making a trip for plains game and whilst not focused on trophys I would be keen to bring back a skin or European mount rather than a full mount for example.

Appreciating the recent trophy act, it may be easier to hunt, then buy a separate skin at a tourist site - pretty contrived in my mind given respect to the animal etc.

I was keen to hear any practical approaches people may have recenlty taken - or am I better off just getting a good camera?

Cheers

Hi studley. I went in March and have 5 plains game skulls scheduled for shipping (still in SA currently). No issues yet or expected in regards to import. Happy to chat if you drop me a DM. cheers

I have brought back from a hunt 2 years previous Hartebeest, Springbok plus warthog tusks. In my baggage. no questions asked at departure or arrival.

I am pretty sure that you can bring anything back Plains Game related just need a licence for anything CITES listed (including hippo hide and ivory)

I am looking at Namibia for plains game, I wondered if anyone who has replied has any experience specifically with plains game there?

I have brought 'stuff' back from a variety of places in Africa.

It is expensive. It is a pain in the arse. It is a nightmare.

It has taken me a while, but do you know what I have found?

Take pictures.

They can be a beautiful reminder, they take up no space, they are there instantly, and they do not cost £7,500 to get back (Kudo horns from Mozambique).

They take up even less space, if you put them into your gun cabinet so they do not even upset your wife...

Hi mate, I am about to depart on my 3rd Namibian trip. PM me with what ever questions you might have.

From what mates have told me that have been out there regularly the shooting and holiday part is the cheap part it's when you what to bring stuff back that it starts to hurt financially.

I was in Namibia with 8 friends- the combined price is hardly any more for 8 as it would be for 1.

Personally I would seriously consider photographs, stored on a tiny SD card to be professionally printed and framed back in UK. Far better option imo than stuff gathering dust.
Just get kitted with a dslr camera, 70-200 lens and shoot on auto with a fast, quality card or two.

Willowbank.

I agree, I have a trip planned to Zim in three weeks and was thinking of asking an artist friend to draw a study of the buffalo from pictures a la one he's done before Dagga Boy by Keith Sykes (but not at that price!)

Hi Studley, like tusker, I've been out to Namibia last year (first time!) and brought back some stuff in my luggage, trophies are due to be back in the UK later this year. Happy to answer any questions you have!
