You’ll pay duty on the goods depending on the commodity code. May be duty exempt.Isn't the 20% VAT also on the cost of the shipping too?
This is what puts me off buying from America, the postage charges are usually the same if not more than the item and barely ever below $90 and then they get hit with another 20% on top![]()
I've never seen the transport cost broken down such as that, separating out the UK costs from those incurred abroad. You’ll pay duty on the goods depending on the commodity code. May be duty exempt.
20% vat on the value of the goods.
Additional vat on the cost of transport within the UK only. No vat allocated on the transport costs accrued within the EU.
Possibly 1-4% admin fee ontop of all of it
I mainly do project or much larger transport logistics and clearances so no idea how the couriers work but there is not vat payable on international freight so technically there should only ever be vat applied to the uk part of the movement.I've never seen the transport cost broken down such as that, separating out the UK costs from those incurred abroad.
I've always had a Parcel Force bill of £16 or so for the admin or processing fee then they add 20% VAT on the total of the item plus original shopping costs![]()
I suppose the difficulty is where the shipping is a flat rate, door to door how do you (as the buyer) determine what the UK costs are and so argue what the VAT amount should be.I mainly do project or much larger transport logistics and clearances so no idea how the couriers work but there is not vat payable on international freight so technically there should only ever be vat applied to the uk part of the movement.
What utter rubbish. When we were within the EU our Customs had very little to do as regards EU trade. There was no need for them to get involved. Sending something to and ftom Germany was like sending something to another part of the UK.No no no, it's our own civil service stubbornly refusing to let go of the powers that the unelected EU commission gave to them, eg that's why EU REACH was merely retitled UK REACH instead of abolished as it should have been!
Funnily enough my 1st job at 17 was as a shipping clerk c.1978, I was responsible for completing various shipping docs for goods going to amongst other places Bulgaria. But before Brexit, there was no need for any goods going to abd from Europe to go anywhere near customs, so none of this embuggerance.
Of course those in favour of Brexit cannot see this, nor understand the level of additional embuggerance and cost that has imposed on all UK business and people.
Hopefully the new UK government will get around sorting out the mess and removing the totally unnecessary levels of bureaucracy that is utterly killing the UK economy.
We used to ship IRS Jag back axles to the US (as they used them for custom cars) my mate was a shipping clerk and at weekend we scoured the car breakers for them. 22 cwt Transit with a York engine that needed more sniff than a 80's puck band to start it. Much more fun back then lolFunnily enough my 1st job at 17 was as a shipping clerk c.1978, I was responsible for completing various shipping docs for goods going to amongst other places Bulgaria.
The odd thing on the context of Brexit is that goods got shipped successfully, both ways with little drama.
Approx 50% of our trade was with countries outside the EU, and that trade took place successfully, and.in addition currently 42% UK exports go to the EU.
One of my jobs was organised containers deliveries to exporters for shipping goods to Malta. We used to ship IRS Jag back axles to the US (as they used them for custom cars) my mate was a shipping clerk and at weekend we scoured the car breakers for them. 22 cwt Transit with a York engine that needed more sniff than a 80's puck band to start it. I used to weld fixing points as the double stacked trailers the Nigerians who exported them had to have 20mm wire rope fixings. One of my jobs was organised containers deliveries to exporters for shipping goods to Malta.
One East end yad used to cut cars in half, stand then on the cute ends inside the container, and fill the empty space with engiens/gearboxes, as parts attracted much less duty in Malta at that time.
On one occasion we.cpuldnt get a container to him as the ship was fully booked. He threatened to break my legs if he didn't get one!![]()
To draw an exact parallel. You live in a little village which has a school, a shop, a health clinic and a sewerage treatment works. It is more than capable of looking after the 500 households.Funnily enough my 1st job at 17 was as a shipping clerk c.1978, I was responsible for completing various shipping docs for goods going to amongst other places Bulgaria.

I was over there last week. Your fuel price at the filling stations is 5 to 10p cheaper per litre on both Petrol and Diesel. I filled my car near Portrush at £1.41 per litre of dieselNot many positives about living in N. Ireland but still being part of the Customs Union and having free trade with the rest of the EU is one of them.

We've left , get over it!What utter rubbish. When we were within the EU our Customs had very little to do as regards EU trade. There was no need for them to get involved. Sending something to and ftom Germany was like sending something to another part of the UK.
What then happened is their workload increased by 200 or 300% with minimal additional resources, infrastructure and absolutely no plans in place with directions being made up based on whatever Boris’s girlfriend or Rees Mogg or whomever could read from their tea leaves.
Added to this rather than leaving EU regs as they were - they worked and every body was used to them, somebody changed all the names and definitions very slightly so that nobody now has a clue. For what exact result other just to cause huge costs.
Many many businesses have just given up. Many others have set up European operations and given up on the UK altogether.
All in the name of what benefit exactly???
