Inspiration - 7mm rm needs rebarrel (or smolting…)

Thanks everyone so far. I’m sold on
7mm prc (I think!)

What would be the right length (to be used with a mod) for hill stalking? It will be in the grs bifrost stock.

Thinking 24”. But then what about profile? It’s all a bit technical for me!!
Depends how tall you are, how big you are and whether weight bothers you.

I’d go 26”, that’s what my 300 PRC will be and my .280 is. Don’t find it an issue with the SL5 on the end.

6’4 and 92kg but I’m not far off 50. Fit for now! so I guess shouldn’t be too concerned about the weight at the moment but in 10yrs might be different.

Depends what your shootings the most. For red deer I favour my 7rm. Not because the power is especially needed but more to deal with conditions I hunt in. For roe my .243 is a better option, kinder on the chest cavity than the 7rm which with 150grns buggers the little deer. Truth be told there isn’t real the perfect round for all species / scenarios it’s all just a compromise.

That said I read with interest about the 7 prc, and as per points perviously made, it seem to be ballistically improved over the 7rm but still the sweet spot between the .300 prc and 6.5prc- at least on paper!

I am probably the wrong one to ask as I like speed, so always go for longer barrels, but if you use a cartridge designed for speed give it a long barrel, otherwise get a 7-08.

In all honesty the cost of a chop and re thread isn’t prohibitive, £80-100, so you could go 26” and chop it later if you find it doesn’t suit.

So if google has converted ft/s and m/s correctly and I’ve understood two differently presented tables:

In factory the Hornady 6.5prc 143gr chart gives mv of 2960 ft/s from a 24” barrel

RWS 6.5x55 140gr chart gives mv of 2614 ft/s from a 25.6” barrel

thanks for pointing out that was a useful exercise
I homeload my 6.5x55 with 114gn yew tree to about 3100fps kills the biggest reds to 440m but it has a 24” barrel. If you want more gun then 7prc probably but it won’t kill them any deader

For this reason, my impending 300prc will be 32". It's built for a single purpose though.

I’m going to admit to being quite annoyed with my stupidity

As a last ditch I switched mounts as well as scopes etc

And found this…

Not sure if I’m annoyed or pleased I’ve found what must be the issue

It’s been sliding in the mounts for some time, sorry for wasting everyone’s time!!! And my ascertain that I’d tried everything.
