BDS online DSC 1

The BDS is online but you have to attend an assessment day for the module exam and the shooting but the PDS1 is completely online and only the shooting is assessed. Have I got that right?
Totally correct, the whole thing about DSC1 is you have to sit proper assessments, done by qualified Assessors, then qualified Internal Verifiers check the standards have been upheld.
The online option is a different way to undertake the learning element.

I can see huge advantages for online but surely the PDS1 is open to abuse, as in, no one is there to monitor whether you have ‘accidentally’ left the manual open during the exam part?

For those of you who have Instagram, there is more information available about the course in this short clip

I was delighted to see the BDS offer the online option. Realistically with a young family and a full time job the idea of taking 3 or 4 days off was probably not realistic for a long time so this gives me a way to DSC1 this year which is great.

Has anyone been through the online course up to the in-person assessment as yet? Keen to know any feedback or useful tips!

Cheers

I’ve just started it, done a couple of the modules.

I’ve had to do far more online training professionally than I’d ever wish on anyone. This is a pretty good example of the genre to be honest. The videos are pretty clear but not too long, and the written material is present as a ‘book’ so you can read at your own pace for each section. You don’t have to click through millions of slides, do patronising ‘fill in the blanks’ exercises or any of that kind of stuff.

It does seem expensive compared to an in person course, but I suspect that it cost a fair bit to create the online version and DSC1 is not a ‘high volume’ course selling thousands and thousands of units like an HSE course or something. I imagine they’ve set it at a similar price to try and recoup some of the start up costs.

I've just signed up for this at the weekend along with a BDS membership as you have to have the membership to use one of their rifles on the assessment day. I've only just submitted my FAC application and given my assessment is in May I'll have little choice but to use one of their rifles.

much like you I've done a boat load of corporate training on line over the years and this seems better than a lot of the patronising drossy've had to do for work. I've also been involved with learning and development course creation as was a systems trainer many moons ago and I can confirm a serious amount of effort goes into creating online content. Its easier than 4-5 days face to face is I'm happy to eat the cost for convenances sake.

Great idea, there aren't enough people holding courses at convenient times or locations.
there will always be the 'yeah but' crowd moaning that its not proper training, agreed, but that entirely misses the point. The papers are for the insurance companies, and therefore farmers, peace of mind just like with your gas, electrical or driving tickets. If you think people should be mentored, mentor people. occasionally someone will post that they are helping new people out, but it's a tiny percentage of the site's membership. Facebook is full of under 30's trying to get into stalking, and finding its a closed shop. this is a great starting point.

Although as the new course is LANTRA approved, it will have the same verification process to adhere to Ofqaul standards so I assume no different to DMQ.
