Travel with firearms on a train

Hi all, has anyone travelled to Scotland vi train with firearms. Do I have to notify the train company etc.

I have always used a discrete musical instrument or fishing rod type case or slip. No problems but no inspection either and I am of the opinion that’s it’s better to seek forgiveness than ask permission on this one?

If you notify them they'll probably have the heebie-jeebies, and say no on principle.
I'd just do it and say nowt to anyone. A hard gun case looks pretty much like any other kind of case. Could just as easily be a musical instrument.

If you look in the terms and conditions of the ticket you will find they do not allow Firearms on a train, got pulled at Crewe some years ago..

It was a Sergeant who told me that he used to do archery and thats what he thought was in the pelican, I told him thats whats not in the case, he then explained to me the T&C's of travelling on a train. He let me continue on my Journey with a warning, never done it since.

Call the train operator. LNER are fine, ScotRail not so much. National conditions of carriage do not preclude firearms but also allow the train operators to apply their own restrictions.

Simplest is a take down gun and just have it packed inside a duffle bag or ruck sack. With a bolt action rifle just remove the stock. Most will pretty much return to zero when you reassemble, but check. Its one reason why I really like my combination gun - longest piece is the 25” barrel.

I used to do it quite a lot. Put it in a hard case and put a few music related stickers on it.
