E Collar training help

Hello all,

I have recently bought a dogtra 640c to stop my dog from chasing hares/pheasants/other dogs/deer etc. My aim is to use it very sparingly and only when needed.

My question is where can I find a reliable and informative guide on using an e collar? There may be a wealth of information of YouTube, but I have no idea which videos are any good.

This information would be relevant for any suggestions.
From my limited experience, the trick is to cause the dog to believe that the shock is coming from the chased animal and not the handler.

Yes, she recalls well normally and is otherwise well behaved.

She is a Lagotto Romagnolo. (13kgs )

There is quite a science behind using one of these devices.... it's not a simple as "Zapping" the dog when it chases/runs in etc.

Hi James, I'm not against E-collars and have used one myself previously to resolve an issue, however it appears you have a general issue with the dog ignoring the stop whistle which an e collar may resolve but I'm not sure sure that is the answer. If you had one specific undesirable issue to resolve, e.g. chasing sheep, you could use a collar for the dog to associate showing an interest in sheep with the discomfort of the shock. It sounds like you need to reinforce the stop whistle generally, which can be achieved in various positive ways, so you may be better off with a couple of lessons with a decent gundog trainer

FWIW we have an ESP bitch who has been trained to respond to the whistle along the lines of a working dog, but she is not worked. We have an electric collar for her which gives the option to shock or a beep noise. As others have suggested the 'trick' is to use whichever signal you deem appropriate, at the right time to allow the dog to understand that it is doing something you dont want it to do.

Overuse will likley prove unproductive, but so will using it at an inappropriate moment.

Im pretty certain we only ever used the shock when we first had the collar many years ago, if we think we may have an issue, we put it on the dog, which in itself alters the behaviour of the dog, she is more attentive to commands, and if required use the sound which illicit the desired response, i.e. she stops chasing whatever it is she was going to chase.

Think of the collar as another means of communication, not a means of punishment, I am not suggesting the op/anyone was suggesting it should be used this way just trying to explain how i understand they can be effective.

Does yours have a dummy collar to be worn at other times, otherwise dogs learn it only happens with this horrible different collar. Very useful tool but needs to be used carefully. Make sure the dog gets loads of praise when coming back to you so it doesn't associate you with the shock.

There are a few good videos on YouTube showing how to condition the dog before even using the collar

It’s use is simply to turn the dogs attention back to you. Nothing else really
Certainly not as a punishment and it should never have to cause the dog pain.

Have a look at standing stone kennels YouTube channel. A very good American HPR trainer. The Americans put us to shame when it comes to pointer training, and they use E collars a lot so should have the info you're after

I use a collar not to train a dog, but to correct her behaviour and remind her of her manners when she starts to give me the two finger salute ( as they all do at some point).
Get the dog trained and responsive to commands, particularly drop and return first, use the collar only when required to remind her of what she already knows.

Lagotto are termed are "sensitive" and don't do well with aggressive training, like collars etc. Best way is to get some proper training completed. My Lagotto is great off lead but when young he was a nightmare, so it will come. However I don't use him for tracking [which he would be good at] or retrieval, he is a house pet.

I known dogs that are angles with them on, right bastards without. Just go back to basics, get her to respect you fully and she’ll do what you want.

Hi James , I'd suggest getting some basic training in before trying to expose your dog to such distractions. ( i see your previous post referencing a park) We are fast approaching the season dont be in a rush to take the dog out until its trained.. train it then enjoy it because an untrained dog isnt enjoyable.. If possible see a gundog trainer with a good track record with whatever breed you have. If you've got no training in the dog you'll end up winding it up next thing you know it will be making a noise and sit there whining it's tits off or running off barking. I work/shoot over my own spaniels imo you need some training in there before you can juatify strapping a shock collar onto it. Train the commands in a controlled environment then build it up.for example if my dog then misses a turn whistle or doesn't stop to flush the dog can be corrected and will know what for.. you've trained the commands. You want it not to chase game but can you get it not to chase a tennis ball? Before mine go in a rabbit pen then need to pattern , stop on a whistle and sit up to a ball thrown in front of them with no whistle while it's hunting. The dog understands what's expected in a semi sterile environment you then proof the training with more distractions. If they chase they can be corrected and praised accordingly until eventually they are steady. Character of the dog plays a big factor aswell in that respect as to how much pressure a dog will need. But you owe it to the dog to put the leg work in before hand. You nurture and direct the prey drive not crush it. A dog with no drive because you've knocked/shocked it out of it isn't worth a ****.
