Alternative to Land Rover products.

Hi.
I did not want to hijack 'Bukshot's' thread on Disco 5 and their reliability.

So my question is, what does that leave a person wanting that type of vehicle? Something comfortable to travel a distance, be decent off road when you get there, have a decent amount of room in it, sort of disco 4 type internal space thing. Most of all decent reliability. Maybe petrol as an option? Modern Diesels are a nightmare.

Any suggestions?

I seriously thought about getting a duster 3 4x4 but no diesel option so I'll get something else instead

Iv got the 21 plate and tbh Dacia are useless cancelled my order for the new one. Wouldn’t waste my cash on another.

OP. The new Santa fae looks decent

It's a real shame Land Rover can't get their act together regarding reliability because if not for that, they'd be up there, if not the best utility up market 4X4s. I've had 2 Discovery 2's and a Discovery 4. They were all I wanted. Except for reliability. The first Disco2 I had managed to get every single fault they were known for in my ownership. The second actually proved pretty good but it was a pared down version with no air suspension, sunroofs or other extras that tend to break. Then I bought a Disco4. During the warranty period it had a few problems and that continued after the warranty expired. It was a lovely car to drive, successfully being a great luxury car and mixing top notch off road credentials. But the problems and, probably more importantly the cost to remedy them was fairly continuous.

Other vehicles seem to compromise, either being pretty good off road but agricultural on it or the other way around. Pickups are, of course a different beast. Toyotas are a great alternative though. Not needing the load carrying abilities now and not doing as much off road stuff now I don't keeper any more, I've gone for a VW Tiguan 4motion, which fits the bill for me. Of course there are quite a few similar mid range vehicles with some degree of off road ability which, to be honest would do most people rather than having a big behemoth, if only some people's egos would let them get one. Although if you need a vehicle to stuff a big red in, look elsewhere!

We run disco 3 with 215k miles and a tdv8 sport. Nothing compared to the d3 for practicality and comfort. I’ve just put a donor engine in a disco 4 that snapped its crank at 130k. It had full lr history which meant oil changes every 18k, which is absurd. The oil was like grinding paste. The donor jag I have had the engine out of had 118k and had oil changes between 6 and 9 k miles. The oil was still slick and a far cleaner engine than the filthy disco one. Oil changes are a massive part of them issues they face, but 5e crank snap issue is a lottery sadly. Some do huge miles with no issues or like sister in laws, 45k and it snapped. We’ve had new shiny Touareg and it got we buy any car in the end as it was no good for what we do, hard ride, poor dealer support and we used the high mile disco over it. The 1300 quid disco on here would be my choice over a shiny 1000 quid a month lease deal on a new unreliable plastic Land Rover product.

The discovery line ended with the disco 2. Have you thought about Audi Q5 or 7, volvo XC something or other as they seem to have a few sizes or a VW toureg or tiguan?

I running a Freelander 2 and wonder what I could replace it with. Hopefully not for a few years yet. Only at 142,000 on the clock. (I’ve just jinxed it now, haven’t I ?)
I do need a 4x4 with decent ground clearance and a lot of modern 4x4s don’t. Also, living out in the good old countryside, we have water spillage in the winter when the river overflows. I did put mine through 2 foot of water, but off-road, not on the road, again, a lot of modern 4x4 have a rubbish wading depth.
Land cruiser is so far out of my range. Maybe a BMW X5, as long as you can avoid one with a dodgy turbo. But I still want a FF rangie.

2012 full fat, digi dash, 4.4 tdv8. The last of the decent ones. Get one that’s been looked after and they are fantastic!

Yes, that is what my research has pointed me towards. But hopefully, my freelander will give me a few years service, by which time, the 2012 full fat May be too old.
Mind you, might have won the lottery by then.
