Pretty sure when I bought my first shotgun cartridges were £2.50/25 or if you bought 1000 it was about £85… during the 90s I did a lot of clay shooting & used boxes of ‘bin ends’ - a cardboard 250 round ‘outer’ box full of lose cartridges of mixed loads. Sold nominally at 5 boxes per 1000 for about £65 if I remember - I had friends who had a gun shop that got them for me so not sure if they were a widely available thing or not. I packed up clay shooting in 98 & didn’t need to buy game cartridges for 15 years or so as there were always plenty of left overs from loading to cover the odd day as a guest or beaters shoots. Imagine my surprise when I then started clay shooting again & found that £4.50 a box was considered normal . I’m out of game cartridges at the moment so looking to buy 250 & looking at the prices I think we’ll be on bread & water for a few weeks to balance the books!

Should add though, the cartridges are by far the cheapest part of the whole day.

You would really feel the difference being out of the game for so many years and then having to start again at current prices. You are right the cheapest part is the cartridges jist thankfully your not using that many on game shooting. It's the clay pigion guys I don't know how they do it!

We loose the ability to do simple addition! I guess I get through about 5000/year, but i can only shoot one at a time so that's Ok then.

Funnily enough that came up in conversation the other day, not that I'm a smoker, but person in question was paying £18 per pack per day
