DSC1 manuals for preparation - David Stratton book?

I feel I'm being dumb here but maybe someone can help me out

I want to book my DSC1 (maybe even PDS1 but I doubt it) for after summer this year when I should have some time and a bit more experience. I haven't decided on a provider yet but have a few stalks booked and will discuss options with them.

In the meantime I'd like to read up on sensible course materials to be as prepped as possible

The book I've seen a lot of recommendations for is by David Stretton there's posts on here from people who say that they still refer to it years later

Is this the one from here? BOOKS
Do I really need to phone someone up to get it?
Am I just missing an obvious place to buy it online?

Or am I better off just getting either the BDS or BASC DSC1 manuals ?

You will get sent a manual when you enroll for the DSC1 course.
In the meantime, just read around the subject in general.

I haven’t seen the David Stretton book but you’ll get everything you need in the course manual when you sign up for the course.
I did my DSC1 with BASC. Their current manual is 490 pages. I refer back to it a lot.
I did the game hygiene with the NGO. I don’t know what the NGO DSC1 material is like but their game hygiene stuff is also pretty thorough.

are you thinking of doing the classroom sessions or just getting a book and taking the exam ? basically, the guys giving the course will highlight certain bits in red - those will pretty much be the questions in the exam.

highly recommend doing the course - I did mine with BDS and learnt loads, met lots of people who I still speak to, shoot with.

good luck with you DSC !

Definitely a course but not sure which/where yet

I have 2 beginner guided stalks arranged (one via this site one via BASC). Both with people who also run courses I'm hoping I get on with one of them well and I'll book with them. If not I'll just pick a convenient BDS course

I know I'll get a proper book if I sign up for a course but I like reading and want to get the most out of the stalking I am doing until then

From memory, the book that is issued by BASC for dsc1 is the book that was written David, it may have been updated since then, I am not sure as it is a few years since I did my DSC, with David and Mark.

His wife was an excellent cook and I used her pheasant and sausage recipe to great effect with the ladies when I was single. I digress.

I sort of expected something like that since he had something to do with the original BASC course.

Anyway, i'm sure all the ladies were delighted with your sausage

DSC1 is designed for a complete novice.
I did mine without ever having stalked or shot a deer, and passed.
It’s a very methodical course and everything you need to know for the test you’re taught.
Just go over what you’ve learnt that day in the evening and don’t just get home and forget about it.

I’m not sure if some of you guy’s actually read the manual, it was written by Dave Stretton and has recently been added to, this is the book that is being referred to.

DSCTraining.org do a mock test on line, you can practice on over again. General questions, Game meat hygiene, Deer Identification. Will get you started and test you with the answers.110 questions in all, then different assortment if you try it again.

That's the one.

I know there are revision notes online but I actually like reading and would like to do it properly and know more than just 'pass the test' basics

I'm going to phone up for a copy anyway. Even if I get a different manual when I sign up for a dsc it'll still be worthwhile

I’ve recently bought Larry Fowles The Complete Deer Stalker: From Field to Larder and can recommend that!

Aren't all the DSC 1 manuals the same?
Surely the content is the same? Potentially just different cover/ intro blurb.
I had a 2015? BDS DSC1 manual.
In the chapter regarding rifles and equipment there was no mention of sound moderators or thermal spotters.
Not sure if they are mentioned now?
