Firearms Officer vist

it's getting secured to an internal brick wall but the wall to the side is plasterboard, will that be an issue?
No normally six holes in back of cabinet use decent size and deep plugs and screws , they will be fine don’t need side mounting as well

When you are fixing the cabinet, be aware that most of the weight is in the door.

And when the door is open, the weight now is well away from the wall, giving the weight extra leverage, and all at one side.

I used the little inflatable bag wedges to help control the safe while I was fitting mine.

Take your time, and get help if you need it.

Print this out, get it framed and hang it on the wall where he can see it.

If a sportsman true you’d be
Listen carefully to me…

Never, never let your gun
Pointed be at anyone.
That it may unloaded be
Matters not the least to me.

When a hedge or fence you cross
Though of time it cause a loss
From your gun the cartridge take
For the greater safety’s sake.

If twixt you and neighbouring gun
Bird shall fly or beast may run
Let this maxim ere be thine
“Follow not across the line.”

Stops and beaters oft unseen
Lurk behind some leafy screen.
Calm and steady always be
“Never shoot where you can’t see.”

You may kill or you may miss
But at all times think this:
“All the pheasants ever bred
Won’t repay for one man dead.”

Keep your place and silent be;
Game can hear, and game can see;
Don’t be greedy, better spared
Is a pheasant, than one shared.

Where are you putting it?
Generally, from your flo point of view, it should be out of sight, but easy access.
In contrast, the FLO might not be happy with it being g installed in the loft.
If its a hassle to get to it, it increases the temptation to think.... o I'll put it away tomorrow...

M
it's not going in the loft, will be out of sight from anyone visiting the house and it'll be easily accessed by me 👍

I am sure you already know but in case

1 Over engineer fixing of the cabinet so there are no issues

2 If you have partner/wife, kids be clear they don’t know where you keep the keys, same if it’s keypad they don’t know codes

3 If you have house alarm talk him through it
cheers for the tips

Locally the FEO regularly swings on the open door of the cabinet. Also they insist on M10 fixings into the brickwork and also bolted to the floor. There rationale is that the favourite method to get a cabinet off the wall is a garden spade as a lever, essentially if it can dig into the soft plaster board, then it’s a good chance of getting the safe off the wall. Hopefully knowing a bit about how they think will help you get through the inspection. Good luck.

Had my FEO visit last month, she was happy with my cabinet and my fixings but asked me to conceal it. I had it in the corner of my bedroom away from windows but she said it was still within line of sight of someone passing through so I bought a bookcase from Ikea, hollowed it out, added a door and build a fake bookcase around it, which she was happy with.

My brother in law is working for the NFU, he has a client in Kent, FEO knocked on his clients door, FAC holders wife answered, FEO intros himself and asks wife where the keys, she shows him🫣

Years ago it was a disappearing half bottle of amber liquid for one of mine. He could remove it from my desk on a blink. Never had problems with Bill the Bard. 😁
A story I've told on here before, but I think it bears repeating:
At one time I lived in a particularly inaccessable place, and the police arrived by helicopter bringing the FEO to check my firearms security. Of course I offered him a glass of homebrew, which he gratefully accepted, saying "just don't tell the lads in the chopper!"

You are not alone

The worry is common to most of us come renewal

Tiz a 5 yearly stress

Do people really worry about renewals?
I've always considered renewals just to be a formality that we have to go through.

He likely won’t need to hide the keys anymore. My partner does not know any of my cabinet codes or where the back up master keys are

FEOs should be more concerned about the state of affairs in households where partners feel they need to keep secrets from one another.
That's what I told my FEO when he asked if my wife knew where the keys were kept, and he said "fair point" and never mentioned it again.

Don't tell them where the cabinet is, say they have to find it first, add pressure by starting a stopwatch and folding your arms, they'll be really impressed if you play the music from countdown while they're looking
Yes sounds good till while they are rummaging about they find some rounds you forgot to put back in the cabinet

Lady FEO asked me same question, probably 15 years ago. I replied that any man who thinks he has secrets from his wife after the amount of time that we'd been married was delusional, daft or both.
Cue gales of laughter from her and my wife, renewal duly passed.

It came up in a court case the a spouse or someone you live very closely with, like your mother for instance, it's unrealistic to assume they do not know where your hide keys.

As far as the initial visit goes, the grant is almost a given, it'll just be a time to go through the application and check the domestic situation (remember, you can alter the firearm/ammo requests even at this late time in the process).
Some forces require a quick word with partners and this will be done at the time.

i'd agree, it's not easy to hide a key box (or keys) in a house you share with others.
My wife and daughter will be here when he visits on tuesday so am sure he'll chat to them too
