One for one variation process confusion

Two part question:

I have two slots for .223 rifles on my ticket both of which are filled, I'm wanting to sell one of the rifles, and swap the slot on my FAC for a 22-250. Is it easier to sell it first and then apply for a one for one variation?

I also have two slots for a .22LR, of which I only own one. I'm wanting to swap the open slot for a .17HMR.

On the online form it says 'do you want to dispose of a firearm on your certificate' which has left me a bit confused on the order I should do things....

You only get a free 1for1 if its the same calibre if it is a new calibre you have to pay for the variations just been through it so apply as soon as you sell unwanted rifles I think cost is £20

Okay thanks. Why would anybody one for one the same calibre? Or have I misunderstood something...

I've just been through it with Gwent I thought the same but had an email back as it was not the same calibre had to pay extra it all changed with the new costs I believe

email sent to Gwent As I had sold my .300wm and sound moderator I was under the impression that when applying for another firearm this would be classed as a one for one even though it was a different calibre i must of been mistaken, I have paid the extra fee of £20 so hopefully all will go well, yes I have seen the fees increase

One for one, like for like, variations are free, any other variations incur a fee, which is currently £20. Please be advised however that on 5th February 2025 the fees have been increased there is an increase in the fees payable and variations that are not a one for one, like for like, will cost £47.

This is the email back from GFD

You should be asking them for your money back, I think.

I just screenshot this from one of the police force websites, I forget which.
You will see that the fee only applies when the total number of firearms held is to be increased.

I'm just doing such a variation as I dislike the current rifle (Browning) and I'm getting a replacement Tikka in the same calibre instead. I already have 2 Sako and a Tikka rifle, all with the same 2-stage safety triggers and 20" barrels. The Browning is a very different safety/bolt arrangement and the barrel is a very long 22" of bright stainless steel. Took me a few years to realise that whilst the rifle was a very functional and effective tool, it brought little pleasure to use so at cost, I'm doing a 1-4-1 change in the same calibre.

My impression was that you could just sell the Browning you don't like which would give you an empty slot and then buy the Tikka you do like which would fill said slot. As long as you let them know as soon as you sell the Browning and buy the Tikka then that's all good. You're not varying your FAC in any way as it's all the same calibre.

I thought the variation was if you wanted to get rid of a .223 for example but change it for a similar calibre such as .222 or 22-250

No. Having sold the old rifle you still need to apply for a variation before you buy the new rifle, but there is no fee to pay because the total number of rifles on your FAC stays the same.

Absolutely NOT as @VSS rightly points out. On disposing of the rifle you loose the slot. If you apply in short order it can be reinstated as a 1-4-1.

If only the system you suggest was true, life would be SO much easier but sadly it isn't, a bit like having moderators on FACS - I now have 9!

Of course none of this nonsense impacts our overstretched public services at all

Both wrong. One for ones are free you are swapping 1 firearm for another, dont have to be same calibre

South Wales not Gwent but did one for one - 17HMR for 22LR before new fees and 22LR mod for 223 mod post new fees and both were free.
