A quick update is due. I've spent a lot of time and effort on this and I'm looking forward to see it come to fruition!

  • The design is finalised. I'm going to go with a 100mm front cradle.
  • The printer is nicely dialed in and am currently printing batches of rubber parts. The plastic parts will follow. Lets see how this printer handles almost 24/7 production. I can print 2 sets per day.
  • I'm frustrated with the long lead time for the black coated fasteners. I've placed an order for uncoated stainless fasteners which are due next week and I'll run with these to preserve my sanity.
  • I'll assemble a set of sticks on the weekend to check everything and also create simple assembly instructions.
  • I hope to have 16 sets available for sale by next weekend - price will be £47 posted per set. I'll create a new sales post for this. I'll reserve sets for those who have already expressed interest.
  • The 3d model files will be available a few days after that for those wishing to try printing their own.

A carbon fibre tube version will follow in due course. These are the tubes I'll likely use:

I expect a weight of around 600-700g for the carbon fibre quad sticks vs 1kg for the existing garden cane version.

The carbon tube version sounds interesting. How does it differ? Pole diameter I guess?
Yes, slightly smaller diameter (garden canes are 16mm OD. I was thinking 14mm tubes (Could probably easily go with 12mm tubes). I might try carbon filled material for the 3d printed rod ends also.

Price for carbon tubes is about £110 vs £10 for Toolstation garden canes - which will save maybe 300g. Nice to have but certainly not essential.

carbon filled filament will destroy a brass print nozzle very quickly, there are special nozzles for that material.
What material are you currently using?
