New bipod choice advise.

so, im after a new bipod to replace my 6-9" harris, iv been looking at the tier one carbon fibre tactical bipod 180mm which i believe is 7-9"
or the spartan pro hunt tac, also 7-9",
any thoughts on whats best or the one to go for,.
i shoot off sticks now as just bought some blaser quad sticks, but still need a bipod that i can put on easily enough when needs be, i dont like one on when using the sticks,
but now and again i like to get down and dirty

I got myself the Spartan Pro Hunt TAC ahead of the last CWD season and, despite being a bit sceptical, I have found it to be a great bit of kit
It's compact enough to fit easily into the long pocket of my Seeland Hawker shell trousers
It's dead easy to deploy and locks up when I need/want it to
It's also a cinch to remove without feeling like it could drop off at the wrong time
I could see that the leg adjustment might be fiddly for some, but I get on ok with it, it's easier than adjusting leg length on a Harris
The mount was dead easy to fit to my Sako S20's stock too plus it comes with bits to fit most stocks

I haven't used the Tier One so can't give a comparison, sorry

The Spartan is (in my opinion) better than any of my Harris bipods - by a large margin - it's not slightly better, it's way better
I wish I had bought one earlier instead of laughing at one of my friends for "being a right tackle tart" when he bought his
I bought it from Uttings, and they were quick about delivery too
 
I agree with Geoshot. After many years of using Harris, I then moved to the original spartan bipod. It was pretty good and i liked the overall design concept of not being on the rifle and also the weight and stability once deployed but it had some obvious flaws like the legs wanting to close if you moved the rifle whilst it was in situ and also the leg twist design to extend the height was crap and annoying.

I now have the Pro Hunt TAC which address both those prior problems. It is now literally the perfect bipod. The legs extend just over 3 inches from full closed to fully extended on mine. Lots of adjustability and easy to get comfy on sloping terrain via the leg adjustment and the cant feature which you can have as loose or tight as you like.

My major dislike of the overall system is the natty little swivel stud mounting thing. I hate those and found them annoying and never trusted them for slinging the rifle. I like to carry a rifle with a sling using the proper swivel studs. I felt the design too much pressure on the mounting system when carrying the rifle. I now have gunsmith adapters on every rifle I own and the system is flawless. Get a decent forstner drill bit and drill your stocks and then epoxy in gunsmith adapters and I doubt you would ever need another bipod in your life again.

Drawbacks - You need to carry the bipod and be able to access it quickly. No issue for me as I shoot in anger only from Oct-March, so I always wear my winter jacket which as the perfect hidden vertical pocket parallel with the main zipper. It was like it was designed for the Spartan, it just fits perfect.

The other thing to note is that there are grubscrews which hold the legs and on mine, one of them came loose and got a bit wobbly. I noticed in time and put some weak threadlocker on both and it has never happened since but bear that in mind. For the money, it should not do that but easy enough to fix. Everything else is perfect.

Cottis, are you meaning you dont like your sling on the spartan adaptor, so have fitted another sling stud?

Yep one of those you linked to. I have one of those installed on all my rifles. They sit almost flush to the stock, so no issue with shooting off sticks which is important as most of my shooting is from sticks.

The mounting plate thing that ( i think it is called a universal adapter or something similar) comes with the bipods is not something I like.

what a great idea, iv just watched a couple of videos on fitting them, seems easy enough, ii did also think the universal adapter would be a bit of a pain on my blaser sticks,
i think my mind is just about made up, 1 bipod and 3 adaptors:), might have to look for a S/H one first as there not exactly cheap.
you could sell me yours and you buy a new one, :rofl::rofl:

Posted repeatedly on here me about my Spartan “ecosystem” - it’s not just a bipod but a gateway to using the adapters on on all rifles with my Blaser sticks, off the bonnet via a suction mount (that there no need to vacuum down), off a tripod with a Davis head and off my quad rest where it provides a shooting rest as well as a carriage device.

I Have a Spartan "EcoSystem"!
  • At the range or downhill prone - use TAC bipod (TAC in range bag, long regular carried on bino harness)
  • Sticks (98% of all my stalking) - off my Blaser sticks with modified spigot
  • Off-the bonnet - the Spartan Sucker Mount
  • Off the Quad - Homemade Spartan adapter fitted to a Smart Rest Off-Road
