Traditional Stockmakers

I am trying to get a custom Winchester pre-64 based rifle restocked (or rather stocked - it currently has no stock at all).

I have spent a lot of time trying to sort it out. It seems my options are:

1. Synthetic stock - I don’t want to do this, it won’t look right but is probably the easiest option.

2. Bespoke stock - I have been quoted £3-4k + with a wait time of around 2 years by three different stock makers. This is not affordable.

3. A Boyd’s stock. I expect this would do the job, but look crap. I did wonder if I could find someone to add hand chequering and a nice recoil pad but understandably, the people I have found with the skills to do this have all said they will not work on a Boyd’s stock.

Very frustratingly, I have found a stock maker in America who could make exactly what I wanted at a very reasonable price with hand chequering etc. Unfortunately, it seems that the cost of getting it here will be well over £1k (mainly import and export costs).

Any other ideas?

Go to the states (NYC 250£ flight) and get the stock posted to your hotel or air bnb…bring stock home in hand luggage.

Have a nice holiday and get a new stock.

I have thought of that, as my brother goes regularly but my understanding is that it is a criminal offence in the US and needs a lot of paperwork.

For a stock? How do Boyd’s send them direct to the U.K.?

I was told by the stock maker I spoke to in the US that Boyds have an open export permit, which he does not. He told me that in order to export, I would need to contact a shipping broker in the US to arrange an export permit for a firearm part, the stock would then be shipped as a firearm part to UK customs and I would have to pay various permitting fees at both ends.

The quotes I got varied from £1,100 - £2,500 plus VAT and customs duty.

I have a couple of Boyd's stocks and I don't think theylook that awful.

Sorry, I was probably a bit blunt on that.

It was the chequering that concerned me, although I haven't every seen one, so would probably be best having a look at one first.

Anyone done it, I can't seem to find a pre-64 stock on the cheap. From what I see you have to oval out the rear action bolt hole and maybe some work on the stock to fit the bottom metal. Was going to get a ramline stock from pre64 just so I have a stock for now but it sold before I could order...

I came back from Dallas in October with a rifle stock in my luggage. It was fully declared because it was oversized. US Customs opened the cardboard box and checked it then re-sealed it. No permits of any kind were required.
