I suspect the sentence was so long due to Kevin Costner being upset

They may have been annoyed by the crowds of instawankers clogging the place up. Or upset by the large unnecessary carbon emissions of all the people who visited just for photos. Who knows? The motivation for the crime i still find intriguing, it just doesn't make sense that they did it for a laugh I think there is something/someone that played these useful idiots into doing it.

Having lived in the area most of my life, I'll (sadly) respectfully disagreeit just doesn't make sense that they did it for a laugh
You do wonder why they walked from Dover, to Hadrians wall, then back to NottinghamI suspect the sentence was so long due to Kevin Costner being upset

Probably get away with a kick in the head.It will be interesting to see what sentence the 2 thugs at the airport get given, and also Ricky jones next month for his call to murder people.
"Attack"?? They cut down a tree, not a violent crime. We won’t know the exact details of the sentencing opinion until the transcript of the Court is made available.
But according to the reports in the newspapers, this a premeditated attack.
It seems worth distinguishing between the damage caused to the World Heritage site, which I think was valued at around £20, and "vandalising the countryside".They had to drive 40 minutes, carry a chainsaw for another 20 minutes and then it was filmed. The two involved have given no reasons as why they did it. We also do not know of previous criminal intent or background.
4 years does seem harsh, but it is giving a clear signal to anyone thinking of vandalising the countryside and a world heritage site.

One of the lads was a tree surgeon but he was not the one who cut it down .. just showed where to cut etc .
I was talking to the lads pal who said they just did it for kicks !! Ffs
They got caught because they videoed it and it got out . Then the police tracked there phones locations even though they were on airplane mode at the time of the crime and linked them to the crime ..
Have also heard that the one who cut the tree down was thinking of doing the angel of the north next ??
Oh, if only they'd take such a hard-line on career crooks and paedophilesWe won’t know the exact details of the sentencing opinion until the transcript of the Court is made available.

It may well be that they are career criminals etc. but previous behaviour is generally not brought to the attention of the jury.Oh, if only they'd take such a hard-line on career crooks and paedophiles
It was a jolly jape by a couple of fellers who wanted attention and had issues and a lower IQ than the tree they felled.i still don’t understand why they did it
To put this into context I was burgled a few years ago by a career crook, aged 31 with 29 previous convictions, he pleaded guilty and got sentenced to go on a thinking course. He obviously thought that he had got away with it as not long after he got caught red handed breaking into a safe for which he got a couple of years in jail. Upon his release he resumed his burgling career! Still at liberty , his latest sentence was a community order for using a stolen credit card.It may well be that they are career criminals etc. but previous behaviour is generally not brought to the attention of the jury.
Many criminals get a lesser sentence because the plead guilty and are helpful to the police in their enquiries.
