Sycamore Gap sentences

The motivation for the crime i still find intriguing, it just doesn't make sense that they did it for a laugh I think there is something/someone that played these useful idiots into doing it.
They may have been annoyed by the crowds of instawankers clogging the place up. Or upset by the large unnecessary carbon emissions of all the people who visited just for photos. Who knows?

Aye i just cant understand the motivation either.
Esp with them living so far away.
Ud wonder how the idea even got into their heads.
Plenty of big nice ancient trees roundabout carlisle area itself.
Althou not many as iconic as that.

I think the only motivation could off been some twisted internet thing esp with them filming it.
Getting famous for doing it.
Then with the uproar afterwards realised they had fcuked up.
The internet really has a lot to answer for nowadays.

We won’t know the exact details of the sentencing opinion until the transcript of the Court is made available.

But according to the reports in the newspapers, this a premeditated attack. They had to drive 40 minutes, carry a chainsaw for another 20 minutes and then it was filmed. The two involved have given no reasons as why they did it. We also do not know of previous criminal intent or background.

4 years does seem harsh, but it is giving a clear signal to anyone thinking of vandalising the countryside and a world heritage site.

"Attack"?? They cut down a tree, not a violent crime.

It seems worth distinguishing between the damage caused to the World Heritage site, which I think was valued at around £20, and "vandalising the countryside".

Although, it is most probable that they caused a net benefit to the countryside in chopping down the tree - a major magnet for tourism and associated pollution.

One of the lads was a tree surgeon but he was not the one who cut it down .. just showed where to cut etc .
I was talking to the lads pal who said they just did it for kicks !! Ffs
They got caught because they videoed it and it got out . Then the police tracked there phones locations even though they were on airplane mode at the time of the crime and linked them to the crime ..
Have also heard that the one who cut the tree down was thinking of doing the angel of the north next ??
😁😆 one has to admire such chutzpah

Oh, if only they'd take such a hard-line on career crooks and paedophiles

It may well be that they are career criminals etc. but previous behaviour is generally not brought to the attention of the jury.

Many criminals get a lesser sentence because the plead guilty and are helpful to the police in their enquiries.

To put this into context I was burgled a few years ago by a career crook, aged 31 with 29 previous convictions, he pleaded guilty and got sentenced to go on a thinking course. He obviously thought that he had got away with it as not long after he got caught red handed breaking into a safe for which he got a couple of years in jail. Upon his release he resumed his burgling career! Still at liberty , his latest sentence was a community order for using a stolen credit card.
