I was at a dinner the other day, one estate owner running shoots for very high pheasants, for very wealthy individuals, with very expensive shotguns, was quite unhappy since the lead ban would cause an enormous amount of harm to birds, pricked and injured.

I asked if perhaps running the shoot without the ‘very high’ focus on drives was a potential solution. He said of course not, then we might as well be a common shoot with people using berettas’s.

Some mentalities just have to change

agreed , but it should be yours not his........

stupid is working for free. I dont farmers pay me to control rats, rabbits, foxes, and pigeons.
iF you want to shoot for free dont moan about cartridge costs.
Its not work its a hobby you plank. Different if its your job like a pest controller , I have a job as well.

Im not moaning about cartridges I spend what I have to for my hobby no problem but bismuth is ridiculously expensive .

You believe high pheasant shoots should just continue with manybusinf steel and injuring birds? Because
A. High pheasants is fun, and gives the best shot a feeling of having a big cock
B. If a lot of injured birds, it’s the fault of BASC and the government, due to banning lead.
what?

we are having an inferior shot forced on us and your solution is to ban something thats been fine for ages because the stupid new rules have suddenly made it inhumane sounds more like the new rules are wrong and badly thought out rather than the existing sport.

as for the size of your cock i'm pretty sure shooting has nothing to do with that so are you using feelings or facts?

my original comment to you was a side swipe at groups and people that insist others must change with a kind of religious fervour , just trying to highlight your view may not be the right one no matter how hard you want it to be.

I think people should look very carefully at the mem and arts of their chosen shooting orgs. There seems to be an assumption they are all membership organisations with some kind of democratic element. Most are not, and more like business’s but some who are “membership organisations” do not actually reach out to their membership. I think it’s worth criticising those who do not fulfil there obligations under their constitution but most do. There is usually a structure that allows the org to represent people and or people to become involved in the orgs to affect the way they work. I get bored of people criticising others and organisations…. if you want change get involved.

Then dont use bismuth, use steel or get a different hobby if you cant afford to spend it

We did stop smoking on planes, using phones whilst driving. We now use helmets when biking and skiing,.. why not move with the times.

Before you know it there will be excellent alternatives that will be affordable, and you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about in hindsight. Some rifles and guns might become obscure or obsolete, but that’s what happens, and has happened for many many years.

I don't use Bismuth and never will I shoot lead. Come 2029 will have to move to steel.

I can afford to shoot dont worry about that , I will never stop as its all I do.

Out of interest what do you charge for shooting foxes and rabbits ?

Pheasant shoots are artificial and the drives are planned and designed to put the birds in a certain place and a certain speed. What is inhumane is sticking to the same drives while using different cartridges just to be "sporting".

There is no reason pheasant shoots can't adapt but it seems like a large percentage of those paying to shoot released birds want to make it fun and a challenge at the expense of the bird they're shooting.

Stalkers are quick to call out the practice of shooting deer at extended distances where the margin for error increases drastically but when it comes to a pheasant it's the opposite? Even more relevant when the deer are just where they are and can't be (easily) manipulated whilst pheasants are specifically driven to waiting guns so they are presented in a certain manner.

call me old fashioned but shouldn't these be available before a ban ?

on top of that , if an equivalent performance and price was available there would be no reason to force a ban people would gladly move without ever needing the government to get involved , a bit like people are having to be forced into electric cars and renewable energy - it's not as good and more expensive.

Yes, they should.
But because the whole industry has been burying its collective head in the sand for the past 40 years they're not.
I'm confident that it won't take long though, now there's a bit more pressure on manufacturers to get it sorted.
