It’s started

Count the number of fresh water alien species, like sturgeon etc., that will wriggle their way in without anglers keeping an eye. :(

Sturgeon possibly not the best example to use here, given that they were historically native to the UK and went extinct because of… overfishing 😬

Some of us shoot and fish.

I wonder if it's a Labour council :-|. They frown upon Whippet & pigeon racing as well now, two great Northern pastimes of yesteryear.

A similar thing seems to be happening at Radipole Lake in Weymouth, but by stealth.
The RSPB took it over for £1 a year rent, and immediately stopped the cutting of thatching reed. Now the estimated 23,000 tons of silt that come down the river every year gets lodged in the collapsed reeds instead of passing on out to sea. Where we used to be knee-deep in water 70 years ago, cattle are being grazed every summer. Reeds are encroaching by yards every year. Next year might see the end of angling because the RSPB want mud, not water.
It won't take much of a storm to see a repeat of July 1955, when swans were photographed swimming in Weymouth rail station.

I expect most of them have degrees in some field, such as ecology, so they must know what they are doing. What does an old countryman know about managing waterways and the land :tiphat:

Most of these do gooders have degrees in accountancy and no clue how anything works. There's much more revenue to be made from "wild" swimming and parking fees than a few fishermen that care about the place.

We already know. To flood towns and cities upstream to blame us for causing climate change and here's another tax you selfish bastards....
I read the article and the statements from the council, it’s a classic example of lots of meaningless big words being used to imply a coherent policy exists without specifying either policy or its objectives.
Ask the council precisely what they mean, what their objectives are and precisely how the angling ban will advance those objectives.
