Carbon fibre tripods for stalking?

When it comes to a stalking tripod what do you use?
A thinner legged lighter model like the Sunwayfoto 2830 or do you prefer the thicker 40mm tubed models like the 4030?
i know its a fine balance between weight and stability
Dont say Quad sticks as they are just over rated from what little i've used them

4 B n Q garden canes and a @takbok quad stick kit!

In my personal opinion, carbon fibre sticks are nothing more than a fashion fad, you’re saving absolute chuff all weight worth worrying about

I think the best rests for every day hunting, especially if you have the time and taking longer shots are the very solid rocks, fence posts, walls, tree stumps etc that litter our countryside. Combine these with a bit of forethought, back of your hand, a hat, a gunslip, bit of rolled up clothing or a pack and you have a very stable shooting platform.

With good field craft and practice you quickly learn how to identify such very good shooting rests and incorporate into your hunting.

And the real benefit is they weigh nothing and don’t have to be carried.

Given you are in the trade, I would suggest focusing your efforts making a pack that is light in weight. Long enough in the back for 6ft plus stalkers, that allows a quick shot to be taken whilst wearing the pack, but also tall enough that can used a rest whilst sitting / kneeling, and able to transport one of the smaller deer whole, or larger deer in bits out of the field.

Each to their own. I have a set of Viper Flex sticks with the fifth leg and they are great...especially at ranges out to 200 yards. Im sure I'll get the "get closer" comments but its not easy in an open field with a group of fallow watching you :)

I've wanted one of these for ages. I've got to use a friends Bog pod death grip once and to be honest, it was a bit awkward. Not easy to adjust height on the fly, wobbly when mounted, trying to shoot something and a bit cumbersome to carry. Much prefer my viperflex.

yes i agree the Bog pod are very over rated we were not impressed with those

Never used a tripod for deer stalking, but I use them frequently for photography. Great for landscapes, but for wildlife photos I find them cumbersome to carry and slow to adjust, so I prefer to use a monopod.

When I started deer stalking we used to just use a single stick, or in some cases double sticks. Nowadays we tend to favour quad sticks, but there are still people out there who quite happily shoot freehand.

Lugging a tripod round on a regular "walk and stalk" sounds like it would be a huge faff, particularly when faced with a muntjac standing in a ride for just a few seconds - I can deploy the quad sticks with a single hand whilst holding the rifle, but getting three tripod legs out, adjusting their height, etc, sounds like it would present a challenge.

Maybe a tripod works better when waiting on a field edge for fallow, and I'd be interested to hear how those stalking with tripods actually use them.

You’re telling me you can’t shoot straight off a set of Viper flex at 200 m without a 5 leg?

Hells bells, vicar, it’s either the calibre you shoot or you should take yourself off into the woods for a damn good thrashing🙈😂

I won’t tell you the range then that I’ve killed red deer at with a set of B&Q specials with the 270🙈😂😂 can take you to the exact spot now and you can ping it with a rangefinder if you want
