30-06, unpopular?

The 7x64 is no longer sold very often in new rifles. Compared to the .308, the recoil is too strong. In older rifles, the cartridge is still often used and, in my opinion, it is also a good caliber. The .270 performed really well on the stags; the longest run after the shot was 20 meters, and there was virtually no recoil anymore.

so why do you rarely shoot them?

I shoot 223 and 260/6.5 regularly and they are suppressed. More enjoyable that way. I blew the dust off of my 308 this year because I bought a chassis for it and had so many components to load for it. I go in streaks with my rifles. Next year might be a 30-06 year or a 7RM year.

And really, are you cool if you kill deer with a 30-06? Not really because it’s not a flashy new shiny object. You can’t wear a flat billed hat and Oakleys if you hunt with an 30-06. Also a bit of overkill on deer but dead is dead.

Hello again, - the lessened recoil was because of a supressor i take it ? Recoil wise, a 7x64 and 270 should be quite similar though, no?

And dont forget about the CM man bunns either! haha - nah, we joke, but actually the 30-06 for some maybe being seen as uncool at the moment, could see it become popular amongst others too, for that very reason in part.

My 3006 is very much my go to rifle, and has been for a few years now. The rifle, scope and mod set up work really well for me, so its not just the caliber in my case. I have the seam set up in 243, both shoot equally well and i dont find the 06 noticeably more kicky, but the 243 is used a fraction of times a year now. The 3006 is mostly used for reds on the forest edge, where recovery would be unpleasant to say the least, should they run!

I bought a Mauser Model 12 Extreme in .30/06 off a forum member on here a few years ago. It really is a great cartridge that has stood the test of time but there are other calibres out there better suited to what we have in the UK quarry wise.

I have a suspicion that the 30-06 may make a little bit of a come back in popularity as with light copper bullets the recoil is reduced and the extra speed is very welcome. I'll be taking mine out for CWD in November.

Yep, similarly to some of the old european cartridges, perhaps. .-) What is the standard twist rate of a 30-06, 1-10 or so ?

Sauer use a 1-11 which seems to work really well with copper but the standard seems to be 1-10.

I think a 30-06 might be on my next shopping list , I’m in New Zealand right now leaving later today that calibre would be useful down here used one in Africa too it’s got grunt and think would be useful in both as I plan to return to both to hunt again as well as in the uk on reds and fallow, just what rifle to go for?

why do you find that the 30-06 is particularly well suited for NZ?

Reds long distance, sure other calibres will do same or better but if I’m looking to get a 30-06 I know it will cover

I just did a running boar lesson this weekend and put 50 rounds through my 30-06 in an hour. I borrowed a muzzle brake for the tuition and it made it feel like a .243 recoil wise. I actually missed the usual kick from it, but it still put a huge smile on my face.

How was the sound with that muzzle break though, and did your neighbour shooters talk you afterwards? ,D But yes, i def wouldnt want to shoot 50 rounds of 30-06 in an hour without some sort of recoil dampening.

The sound didn't even register much beyond the usual crack, the brake I used doesn't project backwards. As my instructor and I were the only people on the range and we both had good hearing protection there wasn't an issue

Sounds like a good break that! what type and brand was it ? .-)

I was at the Corinium Rifle range in the Cotswolds with Paul Hill. Highly recommended. It's his own brand, the Boarbraker. To be fair I was that impressed with it that I ordered one afterwards, they are made to order so take about 3 weeks to arrive. Coloured to match your barrel but as my barrel is dull silver I went for plain black.

Using Sako 156gr ballistic tips, very accurate, shot 4 fallow pickets broadside this last week and apart from one rolling down a hill, nothing moved more than 2 meters. Also neck shot a sika front on and you could have taken his head off with a spoon.

Lovely, they are very efficient, mine likes Barnes TTSX in 150gr. Although I'd done a lot of shotgun shooting on clays, some rough and game mine was my first rifle and a bit of a jump up from an air rifle, it was also the first centrefire that I had shot but I instantly fell in love with the feel of how it shoots.
