Full length or neck resize

But what’s the problem?
I’ve done a lot of reloading but have only just started with .22 hornet. I bought a Leek die set (I use Lee very successfully with .243 and .270) that contains a FL sizing die. This die makes the neck way too tight. The bullet shapes the brass and leaves a narrow ‘waist’ below it. Does anyone else have this problem?

I assume you have the expander mandrel installed in the die?

You could use a Lyman ‘M’ expander die (they do one specifically for .22 Hornet) to expand the neck to a more appropriate diameter - or one of the more generic expander mandrels & dies made by various companies.

Ah, I’ve never had to do that with my other calibres when I FL size.
Why would they make a die that doesn’t size properly?
I’ll look into expander mandrels but that seems to be adding another process to a case that already does like to be worked too much.
I’d but a neck only die but would that produce the same neck tension as the FL?

The suggestion of a Lyman M expander die was as a way to help your ‘issue’ - the extra ‘working’ of the case neck will be modest as the Lee expander has already done most of the work. As to why your current Lee expander seems on the small side, who can say.

Is the die box set for the slightly smaller 22 Hornet bullet?

Something is not right as with a standard FL sizing die I've never been able to achieve the desired neck tension without crimping. That said, my 35g V-Max are seated far, far less deeply than yours.

Ps: See post #2 that alludes to my approach which I suggest you adopt: Only neck size the portion of neck that will 'recieve' the bullet, and apply a Lee factory-like crimp.

I FL size all gifted brass back to standard spec.
Including a minor trim,very minor.
New brass from my firings,or factory l neck dize, unless coming up to max spec.
Then FL and trim.

After that,the bin.
I have several non reloading friends with paid for factory luckily.

For stalking I would always recommend FL sizing. I've had neck sized cases get stuck before, even when previously fired in that rifle. It depends on the rifle or chamber and if its dirty etc. but still not fun.
