saluki advice?

IMG_5322.webpmy girlfriend had a series of boarder collies that she trained very successfully. then she got a saluki/greyhound.

the dog is an anarchist. he can do as he’s told but prefers not to.

I was packing up some things and found my Roe call, i gave it a squeeze and the dog had a very strong reaction to the sound. i’ve never seen anything grab his attention like it.

if i use the call for recall am i making trouble for myself further down the road?

thanks

Long time ago I knew a bloke with one- used to run it on foxes that terriers bolted- it was a very good dog at catching. Would not stay with what it caught- once fox was dead. It was off after the next moving target- it was not to bothered what it was TBH 🙈.

If you look up the word stubborn in the Arabic dictionary, they just have a picture of a saluki!! But if you need stamina, nothing better.

I’ve owned a few of these and a few with Sal in them. I have found I don’t have a problem if I’ve had them from a pup. Don’t heed what most people say about them, because most have never owned one, just copying what they’ve heard from others. Go back to basics, sit stay. Walk to heel on lead. Recall in a controlled environment, lane way or alleyway or the like. I always had mine to a high standard.
Remember these are high driven hounds. They were bred for running down its prey, just like terriers were bred for an extremely demanding job.
Some people think their standard working dogs are driven and highly strung. They don’t have a patch on lurchers and terriers.
Anyways it should come good. Just stick at it, plenty of lead work to begin and off lead in controlled area. Are you going to work it somehow?

I’d disagree with a few things there, but we all have opinions I suppose

I worked saluki x lurchers for years, they are aloof ( to put it mildly) , it’s not a made up thing by folk who have never owned them.

Also, not a patch on lurchers , I give you the Cocker Spaniel ! lol. Highly strung and driven seems like an understatement.
