Firearms certificate currently has .22, 65x55 and .308 on it
Recently sold my 6.5 x 55, if I want to purchase another one do I have to reapply to the firearms officer or does the slot become vacant once I’ve sold the rifle ?
Had conflicting info some say have to apply for a 1 for 1 variation others said yes I now have a vacant slot

You will have to put a 1 for 1 variation in ...sadly

Ok thanks, seems a pointless task I’ve got approval for a 6.5, notified the police I’ve sold my current rifle common sense would say safe to have another.

You have to apply, you also need to notify the police of the sale of your other rifle. You should do this in a timely fashion from the sale, a timely fashion would be viewed as within 7 days.

Thanks I did the notification on my laptop as I sold the rifle.
I didn’t intend to buy another 6.5 was going to use the .308 for everything but now I’m tempted by a day night scope and I have really good glsss on the .308 so a cheap 6.5 and a Alpex might be the path to take

There's no time limit (up to the expiry of the certificate) for the 1-4-1 and that's written in the Guidance.
A polite email asking why they seem it necessary to go against the Guidance (seen as best practice) usually gets them to toe the line, especially if they have to write it down.
No one wants to admit to doing it wrong in writing.
