if not a truck , which 4x4 ?

I would, sort of, concur with a 2 vehicle solution. I was just running a 65-plate L200, as the sole family vehicle for a while. 2 kids under 10 and no real commute to speak of other than the occasional away-mission, we did fine. The modern pickups are lot better for rear passenger room than they used to be. I did recently purchase a second car which has made things easier in terms of family logistics and is lighter on fuel than the L200.

Though I find people tend to get a little too obsessed with fuel economy and completely fail to factor in the additional costs of a second vehicle compared with just running a slightly thirstier car for the occasional long journey. You have to be doing a lot of miles to actually realise any savings.

Personally, I would not want to go back to an LR/Jap 4x4 without a separate cabin and load bed. Tick issues aside (am not yet a stalker), a good way to ruin an interior is to do house/DIY/farm/gamekeeping/logging projects and somehow attempt to use the vehicle as your 'going ta town truck' as they say in the US. Sure you can fit bulkheads or even buy commercial spec models, but you're back-engineering a problem that shouldn't exist (Irish+UK governments please take note).

As an example, yesterday I took the L200 to the office, so dressed reasonably smart. Had to pick up some industrial racking from somewhere in Bristol, so I'd thrown in a change of clothes.
Predictably was loading up the racking in the dark+****ing rain and got it strapped down PDQ, tailgate down to support the shelving, but with the top 'cat flap' closed on the truckbox.. Hi-viz vest strapped to the end and we were on our way home. That would've been far more complicated in my old disco 2 or would've necessitated a trailer.
A stalking colleague recently transported a Gram fridge for me back from Colchester to Chippenham in his open back L200 with tailgate down - I then attempted to transship it into my Discovery Sport for the final leg to Bristol. Despite the dimensions appearing to work, suffice to say it didn’t without a lot of hasty readjustment of my stalking layout, during all of which which I damaged the headlong of the car, irreparably 😪

I don’t want a pickup as I find them just too big to park and live with in a peri-urban location where I live. Indeed, until recently, “my weapon of choice for driving around Bristol was a Smart ForTwo! I also never find loose ticks/keds in the car despite the number of carcasses I end up carrying (3 more yesterday). The Gram fridge move was a rarity and I stupidly should have taken the trailer but I couldn’t be arsed to empty it first - lesson learned. However, whilst the DS gives me probably a 90% solution for my extant needs, it’s more than suitable for my current and future envisaged needs. I see too many people going for pickups where the reality is that they rarely need the capacity or utility they provide so end up living with what is in my mind a poorer compromise biased the wrong way  JMVFWIW

I see a 2.4 L200 is to make a return to the UK market.
For me it was the best pick up I have owned, I only got rid when they pulled out the UK market but for my needs it was great both off-road and on road.
I'm still unsure as to wether I need a pick up or suitable SUV with 4x4 capabilities, My mate has just been given a Yaris Cross whilst his Chasis is being replaced on his Hilux, He went to the garage this week as his loan Hilux needed work done on it and his Hilux was still at the garage waiting to be picked up and they've had it for at least 6 month.
He says the Yaris Cross 4x4 is a great car

Given the snow we've had and still have, we'd have been goosed without the truck. In my dreams, I'd have one of the new Landcruisers, but alas that is a long way out of my price bracket. And the reality is, the pickup truck wins on practicality for everything barring perhaps the comfort on a long run.

Just bonkers money
Here is the UK made IBEX range with LR running gear for spares, or other running gear if you want Land Cruiser, also easy to replace panels.

No well in LHD. = £46,030
They are starting to dump them IMO.

guess if you have small kids / family

the reason to keep the deer separate from the cabin as much as possible to reduce chance of them getting in.
also if wet dogs etc .... keeping cabin clean is a bigger priority than if your using it fully hardcore offshore

for some that is reason enough for a pick up

Prefer the deer to be dead before they get in the motor 😂😂

Having to explain why one of my 7 year old kids had a tick on them was enough reason to keep a pickup

Didn’t know about the Ibex. I’m a fanboy of the Honda CRV MKII or any Jap 4 x4 that is reasonable cash. Love the Landcruisers but my god they hold their cash - do love them to bits though.

Well this is going to pi55 some peeps off but I’ve been driving (everywhere) a 94 def 90 on aggressive tyres, howls like a small plane taking off on tarmac but never, ever got stuck even in 18” of shite, it was coming in the door shuts lol.
Costs me about £200 a year on bits, I can live with that, and was actually cleaner on emissisions than my Freelander 2 road car.
Needed a rear crossmember couple of years ago but all good apart from that... AND now worth more than I paid for it 20 yrs ago.
