Blue sky thinking.

Before anyone recoils in horror, remember that he asked for blue sky thinking.

Why not turn excess deer into gourmet dog and cat food. People are willing to spend stupid money on their pets, and I can't watch tv for an hour without seeing a commercial about "fresh" dog food sold in the refrigerator section at the grocery.

You could gralloch, skin them, grind them from tip to toe, (eliminating butchering cost/time) pasteurize and mix with some fancy sounding bits like quinoa and kale. The same folks turning up their nose at eating venison would buy this all day long to feed little muffy or poopsie.

there are a few companies who buy venison for dog food and that product has it's own set of regulations.
again the waste will need dealing with and have a paper trail. The venison trade rubs along ok, just sometimes people want to re invent an even rounder wheel

VSS correctly pointed me in the direction of the UK’s pet food regulations when I proposed to start adding some dried deer’s ears to my repotaire and I was staggered by the mandatory independent testing and bureaucracy required  I blame the EU but frankly, we are fortunate to be able to harvest, process and sell deer in the UK with minimal commonsenCE rules unlike our pets - go figure 🤷‍♂️ Sadly, my blue skies thinking can only see the human side getting more challenging and ending up on a par with pets 🙇‍♂️

There may be regulations but I'll bet that someone in the UK has jumped the hurdles and is making bank off of fresh pet food. Why should it not be someone on here?

I can see it now......Tim's Specialty Gourmet Dog Food......made with free range, organic, hormone free, antibiotic free, gluten free, non gmo, sustainably sourced, wild venison.....every package sold directly funds conservation, reduces greenhouse gases, helps nature maintain a balance, and leaves a better planet for the chiiiiildren.

Apologies if you think this has been done to death already but here goes.
Too many deer in certain parts of the country. Systems in place ineffective.
I read an article a few months ago in the BASC magazine about this problem and the best they could come up with was to mentor people so they would be ready to take on their own permission, ( as if there’s a list of land just waiting for the right person to take it on!), and to sell more venison to friends and family. Well I have few family and even fewer friends and those able or willing to take a carcass with the coat on and butcher themselves is very small.
So can SD come up with some better ideas? Blue sky thinking, thinking out the box, whatever you want to call it, don’t worry about detail at the moment, ( that’s so last century!). Get some ideas down and maybe get the BASC or whoever thinking.
I’ll start.
I read recently that RTA’s involving deer cost the British car insurance companies 17 million pounds.
Couldn’t they sponsor a scheme to guarantee a minimum price for a deer carcass? Less deer = less RTA’s!
Speaking to a chap recently who is an engineer on trains. They have a big problem when a train hits a deer at speed and the deer goes under the train and lumps of ballast get caught up and thrown against the underside of the train. Again this must be costing a lot of money.
If you have a FAC based on membership of a club you have to show attendance and use of the firearm. Why not the same if your FAC is for shooting deer?
Give it some thought please, Paul
Systems? What systems? There is no system, certainly not a national system.

When I recently toured Oakland Park’s new facility (large AGHE Scott) I was surprised to hear that all of their possessed muntjac were being ground for pet food.

Well Peter, it looks like Tim doesn't want to get rich making dog food so maybe you and @Ploddy Paul could pick up the baton and run with it. I can imagine it wouldn't be long before you can spend your days stalking and after the shot just drop a pin and have your employees do the extraction, prep and then off to the mill while you head home to count your money haha.

That's pretty slick Tim but I'm afraid that Ol' southern boy has got you beat for entertainment value.

I had to look that one up but based on my search I found a few more buzzwords for the new "fresh" venison dog food.

Novel protein; great for dogs with sensitivities to common (and I stress common) meats like beef and chicken

High omega fatty acids; abundant in Omega 3&6, good for skin, coat and joints

Lean and nutritious blah, blah, blah, eco-friendly protein, blah, blah and so on

"We" (The SD) could put together an ad that sounds so good that only a terrible dog owner could deprive little poopsie of the best food on the market.
