Going to have the above built, what would your factory action of choice be thanks in advance.

Im just embarking on a similar endeavour, it seems the trusted Rem 700 is well out of favour these days, depending on how much work itll need you're getting into the realms of a Borden timberline or similar.
Lots of folk leaning towards tikka although id guess itll be on the limit length wise??
The easiest way would be to buy a dedicated rifle and restock it, the money saved would go a long way to paying for am mcmillan or mdt etc
Impact shooting on YouTube has a very educational video where he takes a stock howa and builds a decent long range gun for reasonable £££
The guys a bit annoying but worth a watch.

Really really depends on the type of rifle you want. Are you looking for a traditional style of stalking rifle, or you looking for an ultra modern chassis / tactical type.

The action is the heart of the rifle, and it is where you interface with the rifle through the trigger, bolt and magazine. Quality of the underlying materials, followed by the fit, finish and hardening are all contributing factors. If you are going to spend several thousand on a custom rifle, find a good maker who shares your vision and take his advice on a good action. Somebody who builds traditional rifles is probably not the right guy for tacticool type rifle and vice versa.

Personally I like traditional type hunting rifles. I would probably go for a Left handed Mayfair or Prechtl if funds were no object with a fixed magazine. More likely it would be a Heym SR20 G in left hand which has the magnum bolt face. I would however investigate one the American made mauser 98 clones in a left hand format, but The embuggerance of getting one into the UK could be limiting. I do like the Parkwest (was Dakota). The Steel lightweight straight pull is another option.

@Mungo has a 6.5PRC built on a Tikka T3 and shoots very well.

All my rifles currently are Tikka, and have various chassis and stocks,so easy to swap and change, but I don't think I could load long enough especially the 300 PRC,not sure of the 7 PRC, although Tikka do a 7 PRC,but I would like a 26" heavy contour barrel, that's the reason of the post,

a rem700 L/A will do you , you could pay a fortune for a custom action if you want but it's only because you want something nice, you won't see a difference in accuracy between a custom action and a trued 700 L/A unless you are a top and i mean top level shooter

i built my 300rum on a 700 L/A , i'd recommend having a sako extractor fitted for the big cases and up your rail screw size because of recoil

depends on what stock options you want
Personally I would choose the chassis you want then find an action from the supported list
All the usual Tikka, Remington, Howa, Sako are solid options
We have built them (7mm PRC) on Sako 75s for a more sporting style
We have built a 32" monster on a Howa in 7mmPRC

Lots of factory options now though from Bergara and other

We will have the new Benelli Lupo in 6.5 and 7PRC shortly
the HPR model is also available in 300PRC

Meeting with gun maker tomorrow.

If I go 20inch barrel plus a mod that would be perfect practicality vs weight vs balance in my opinion.
Will I then be giving away loads of fps vs a 24inch barrel and therefore defeating the object of getting this gun in the first place...

Thoughts?

I'm looking to either 300 norma mag or 300 prc

This for ELR

Now I know that I'm not looking for a hunting rifle so I have no interest in a short barrel - however I would have thought that there must be a great deal of unburned powder in a 20'' barrel ??

I'd be looking for a 27'' to 30'' barrel for my needs

I do, however have medium calibres (9.3 x 62 and 404 JEFF) which are used for stalking / hunting / stopping

They are 26'' barrels - which are just fine to lug around

I’m pretty sure my 6.5 Creedmoor is 22 inch. That feels about right with a mod fitted. In and out of the side by side and clambering through undergrowth, etc. I feel like longer would be annoying.

Will there really be what much unburned powder difference between 20 or 22 and 26?

Short answer is yes

At 20” you will see significant burn flash at the muzzle

Not so at 24”

All PRC I’ve built with the exception of one have been 24”

Shorter you will have burn within the moderator or visible if no mod

Does this matter -

No if a range gun

Yes if stalking and using in low light for obvious reasons

You may lose VO with shorter barrel , but that frankly is insignificant with a magnum cartridge

Is burn within a titanium moderator an issue?
Define issue - burning powder in the mod is completely wasteful and dirty - potentially dangerous over time with carbon build up etc. What the mod is made of is sort of irrelevant. If the question is will titanium deal with it better than steel, the answer is - most likely. But that is not the point. All the powder should burn in the barrel to get the best speed from the calibre/barrel length. If you want noisy flashy and slow then go for it. If you have to have a 20in barrel then choose a different calibre.

Can’t say fairer than that… 24inch it is.

I’m getting 3,000 fps with 180gr from a 24” barrel quite comfortably with RS76.

Interestingly I can’t get much more VO from 160gr CX before hitting pressure. Clearly a product of construction and material.

I would say 24” if you don’t want to give too much performance away.

300 PRC needs a magnum action to be loaded to its full length.
