i was once stripping the main boom on a 500t telescopic crane and a couple of other engineers were there and it had been reassembled very poorly we were noticing as we stripped it and i asked the other two if they had done it last time , they vehemently denied ever having been near it , when we finally got it stripped on the last tele ram there was two names and a date , the pair of them had forgotten they had written their names on the ram with the date last time !

much hilarity and **** taking ensued , one of the pair was my father.......

Worked for Mowlems for press off shore in late 80s early 90s put the concrete base in for the replacement for piper alpha
Got to no some lads who lost mates on it

I was working down the yard at the same time on the Piper Bravo construction around 1990, I left the yard to go offshore but very rarely on the Platforms, I was nearly always on the Construction/Dive vessels which is all oil and gas related but worlds apart to what they call topside.

The pits would have been my calling but thatcher & all the closures killed that off ! would of finished my apprentice to a dying industry
A bit like the oil & gas now
& before people txting saying labour shut more they did …. But people had options to go to the big super pits
