Drag with a rope or cargo strap to wherever you can get a vehicle , fit a tow bar and use a heck pack with plasterers bath for the carcasses. Job done and no one will ever know a deer has been in the car -

I only have a Skoda Yeti in 4x4 flavour with some AT tyres on so clearly nowhere near a real 4x4 and have recently been looking at this… Heck-Pack Hand Cable Winch for Tow Bar Mounted Carriers in the GRUBE shop

No first hand experience yet as I’m sure I read about it on here somewhere. Could help to keep the secondary passengers away from the cabin though.

I have a heck pack. I’m not sure the winch is that important. It’s low to the ground, so if you can roll a deer into a plasterers bath you can then lift one end on then another. Pretty straightforward and they are good bits of kit.

The Audi has ample boot space but low ground clearance. The polo has more clearance but is going to feel a squeeze with more than a muntjac in the boot! The new ground has a lot of fallow I understand and access will be a bit mixed. I’m in for a lot of dragging I dragging. Anyone else in the same boat and any suggestions for how to make the best of it? A replacement car isn’t an option at the moment sadly.

A6 Estate is the thinking man's stalking vehicle I had 10 CWD stuffed in the back of one. Ground clearance is an issue but it sure can carry a few deer when you have need!

Nope have a man can do attitude, remember this - you can get 3 lowland hinds and a calf in the back of an Astra van!

Too much thinking on my part! Sounds like you've come to a sound resolution for yourself. I think the heck pack may be the way for me for transport and some more suitable tyres to give me a bit more range off road. Won't sort the ground clearance so I will just have to take care

First stalking I had I used a Renault Clio 02 plate 1.5 diesel.
1500 acres with a mixture of clear fell and mature timber
Used a Poppin’s roe sack which has a liner and all was good.

I used a mki fabia for some pretty muddy road conditions over random rough forestry / farm track I had to visit regularly with work many moons ago.

I had her up the hill on more that one occasion- was amazed where I could get her without getting stuck.

Small light and nibble, with ok clearance and departure angles helped. Didn’t use it for chucking deer in but would have done if I needed to at the time.

Vw polo is basically the same.

A jimmy would be the ultimate small off roader IMO. That isn’t too much.

My "new" motor. I've probably put in to it more than i paid for it...

Suspension all around, front + rear axle service with new bearings + seals throughout, new set of boots and the most important one, a locking rear diff. It will go anywhere!

I use a Skoda Fabia - estate version so a bit longer than a polo, but not vastly different.

One of these boxes goes in the boot and can take any number of muntjac, a few roe and will easily take two fallow prickets.
Biggest I've managed on my own was a 70Kg larder weight fallow buck. I used the lid as a sled. Put the box on its side and tipped him in before righting the box. Lift one end of box onto the lip of the boot then heave the other end in.

Obviously if u had 2 props/legs either side could u attach a D ring to boot and attach a hand winch/pulley to lift deer up??

The problem would be if u bent ur rear door.
So probably not a big job to carry an extra bit of steel thou, so more like a goal post, 2 legs and a horizontal so no wieght on back door, all its doing its holding it upright

Prob only need to be 1" x 2 5 or 3mm box section, and u can get some sizes of box that slide/sleeve inside each other so would be pretty simple to make an adjustable set and not massive long poles to carry about.

May not be that daft an idea if u do struggle lifting a deer up and in.
A cheap rope pulley combined with a prussic knot ( other friction hitches would work, but not many easier to tie) for adjusting hieght
Be a very cheap set up.

The lack of hieght may be a limiting factor though.

I used a Nissan primera for roe and occasional fallow for a few years, was grand with a tub in the back.

My advice is get a toe bar mounted heck pack if shooting a fair few fallow. Easy to get them into and no dirt or damage to car.

How I read that is he can't get the car to recover the deer hence "I’m in for a lot of dragging"
