Sleep deprivation...

following with interest since i'm 55 now and good sleep is rather illusive , i can make it through the night still without needing to get up for a wee but have trouble getting to sleep then don't sleep well and always wake early

so any ideas other than drinking less alcohol or black coffee and losing weight or stopping doom scrolling on my phone are welcome !

I had a bit in the last year where I was waking up needing to go in the night a lot. I've been using the following:

Decaf

Work out timing for last sensible time for a cuppa/drink before bed (do this after the heatwave). There's a goldilocks zone between too early so you're thirsty in the morning and too late so you wake up needing a wee.

Make a point of holding onto a full bladder during the day to increase your tolerance, including practicing tensing the sphincter on your bladder- it's a muscle and can be trained.

Get an idea of how full your bladder is when needing to pee- is it really full or just a bit.

Once you've done those, when you wake in the night, if your bladder isn't completely full, choose to ignore it. With time I was able to hold it overnight and even if half waking, can get back to sleep more easily. Not a complete solution but has helped.

I haven't had a full nights sleep for a couple of years now. Being treated for prostate cancer, up every hour for a wee, made worse by a kidney problem so have to drink extra water as well.
At least it's given me the excuse to get up and go foxing at two in the morning.

I moved house 18 months ago and have now only one TV. In the living room

Getting the TV out the bedroom improved my sleep no end

And I will admit to spending 2.5 k on a mattress which was life changing

Go out after foxes or rabbits etc at least once or twice a week then get up and go out crow shooting at 3.30 once a week as well...you will then be so knackered you get a decent nights sleep ..those nights where you get to bed at a sensible hour anyway :) 👍

Reading for a few minutes after getting in to bed gets me off to sleep much better than if I just get my head straight down. Seems to clear the mind.

Alcohol is a culprit for sugar, really good whisky unfortunately used to wake me near bolt upright after four hours, something to do with the metabolism.
Magnesium Glycinate supplements certainly help me.
