The bike requires tyres front and back and was wondering what SD members use for general use .this bike is used mainly on farm tracks and field headlands hardly any road use .it has dunlops on it at the moment and found they wore down quickly .the bike is used 7 days a week 52 weeks a year
cheers

I have maxxis wildcats on my 500, the bike does forestry, farm and road work in equal parts and I cant fault them been on for 3years now and are wearing exceptionally well and are e marked for road use, the bearclaws are a great tyre if you purely off road and in a lot of mud but no use on road or hard ground.

Bear claws give good grip as said,
But wear quickly.
I feel it's just one of those trade off's between grip and longevity.

Hi norma BKT wings give good wear and grip and being a 6ply are a little more resistant to punctures than some, very similar to kenda bearclaws in tread pattern if you want more grip go for Kenda executioner these are also 6ply and very hard wearing, very similar to Goodyear mudrunner in appearance. hope this helps keith

Many thanks ,don't believe it but the Honda nearly let me down tonight stopped the bike turned the engine off shot two rabbits went to start again and just a click bugger ! Walked back to shed got leads and a battery (only had a new one dec ) when I got to bike again it started ,did it again but got going again .
got home anyways will see what happens in the am .dodgy solenoid ?
Cheers

Just went click, why not just pull the string ?
On my Kawasaki 360 I never use the button for a cold start as it doesn't get much use, always goes first or second pull.

Neil. :)

norma it will be the starter motor brushes, in some places they are just making enough contact, other times they aren't. occasionally if you pull rope whilst pressing button it will start to turn over, they aren't to bad to fit about 1/2 hour and cost is about 27 quid plus vat. we often have people say they need a new starter motor and it turns out to be new brushes.hope this helps keith

It wouldn't start yesterday evening after work Keith the little solenoid thingy next to the battery just clicks I've ordered one now will see how that works out .only got my traps to check this time of year good job I've not got birds to feed .first time it's ever let me down .will let you know the out come .

Norma,

I would top up battery if you can and check that first, if then the problem persists link out the solenoid and see if it starts then change it. You may have a dodgy battery esp having one installed in dec so i would start there, £££ spent on the solenoid may be a wasted avenue from experience.
Wildcats are the best general wear tyre however your bike 500 is a big beast so the weight from the machine will tend to eat tyres no matter what they are when used for general road track work.

good luck with it

i used this with green slime added

TRY a jump start if it go's then a battery fro £30 will sort it if it don't then starter motor is not throwing so remove it do a throw test then clean it look at brushes replace all and run throw test ! all working replace to bike job done if not (burn it ) lol no! get it to the man that can for a service .

It might be worth giving Moretons at Offchurch (Farmers Tyre) a ring for prices. I had a set of complete ATV trailer wheels off them for the same money most other dealers where doing the tyres alone.

cos thats like havin a dog and barkin feller
also he may be disabled !
or just won'ts it to work as it said on the tin

Norma if the solenoid is clicking normally means it is working, the little bi-metalic switch inside is bending when power is applied, if you have a mult-imetre put it on the positive terminal of the starter press the button and see if you get a reading, you should get the same as the battery voltage if so then defo the brushes.

Norma, not to bad a job remove motor then you will need a 7mm socket to remove the 2 bolts that hold it all together lay all the parts out in a line as you take it apart, fit new brushes take care not to break plastic insulator as you cant buy that bit if you break it ( i have had to make a few of those), then re-assemble in reverse order takes about 1/2 hour from start to finish good luck

Solonoid didn't fix problem as you said Keith ordered brushes should be here Monday mate ,I found a pull cord ! By god they take some pulling and strangely not had to use it much as the starter has improved .not like my back !

Doug, the brushes should do the job but as for the difficulty in pulling the pull start, did you try opening the valve before pulling it?
(its a black lever on the top of the engine) First you need to pull the cord gently until TDC and then lift the lever. It should then pull a lot easier and start 'almost' first time. Not all bikes have got it but its been on our 300,350,400,450 and 500's, so its on most of the Hondas...
